Finally, after weeks of preparation, it was race day. On the morning of Saturday, January 6, 2018, the racers entered Angel Stadium of Anaheim for the opening round of the 2018 Monster Energy Supercross Series. Six of them in particular—Justin Hill, Justin Cooper, Adam Cianciarulo, Joey Savatgy, Aaron Plessinger, and Mitchell Oldenburg—carried the weight of contending for the 250 West Coast title on their shoulders. For each racer, the opening act of the West would be filled with drama, questions, nerves, and pressure. No matter how much they worked with their teams to prepare, only race day can reveal one’s true speed, fitness, fierceness, and equipment. Until the checkered flag flew, all six racers wondered where in the world they would stand when the stadium emptied out.
