Power is everything in the 250 class, and the KTM 250 SX-F has produced the most impressive peak horsepower numbers on the dyno for the past several years. Ranked second in our 2016 250 Shootout behind the Yamaha YZ250F, the orange bike was overshadowed only in the low-end to midrange power and front suspension categories. One of the most interesting and intriguing bikes in recent years has been the KTM 350 SX-F, a midsized four-stroke machine that’s raced in the 450cc class against full-sized machines. Armed with a smaller, higherrevving engine, the 350 is at an overall horsepower disadvantage, but its engine character and more manageable personality make the compromise in brute horsepower a fair trade. When Husqvarna was acquired by the same parent company as KTM a few years ago, we waited with bated breath to see if the “Swedish” brand would introduce a 350 of its own. To our delight, the FC 350 was included in the all-new Husky lineup, and we suddenly had two great bikes to choose from in the middleweight division. Compared to the competition’s latest offerings, we’ve seen very few recent changes to the Suzuki RMZ450. Sure, there have been sporadic mechanical or cosmetic updates to the yellow machine, but in some ways the bike that Ken Roczen claimed the 450 class title aboard during the 2016 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is the same machine developed by his boss, Ricky Carmichael, during his storied professional career.
