Of all the creatures in our uplands, the contender for the gnarliest, most Trail reader-like mountain inhabitant may surprise you. It spends its life high in the mountains, night and day, rain or shine, or snow for that matter. Welcome to the ptarmigan.
Before we go any further, it’s pronounced with a silent ‘p’, so it sounds as if you’re saying ‘tarmigan’. They belong to the grouse family and are a similar size, with a wingspan of 54 to 60cm. In the UK, they are only found in Scotland, high in the mountains, normally above 2,000ft, but in the west they occasionally inhabit lower elevations.
