BASE LAYERS
Though they’re often neglected, base layers are arguably the most important element of your clothing system. If you feel the cold, a thick, heavyweight layer will deliver maximum warmth. If you run hot, a lighter, fast-wicking layer is a better choice. For stop-start winter hillwalking, mid-weight layers strike a good balance. In all cases, look for a close, body-hugging fit with plenty of length in the arms and torso to ensure full coverage. Thumb loops, a neck zip and a stand-up collar are also useful extra features.
