The time of year is here when the prospect of staying out after a long day in the hills is as tempting as retreating to a warm pub – so there is no better time to embark on that most wonderful of things: the multi-day walk. There’s something incredibly pure about covering distance – proper distance, from hither to thither, as opposed to round in a convenient circle – by foot. Long distance trails are the ultimate examples of this, but there are plenty of swifter options linking some terrific towns via mountain landscapes made for traversing. How about three days between Barmouth and Betwsy-Coed? Two between Keswick and Coniston? A weekend of Fort William to Kinlochleven over Ben Nevis and the Mamores? Or, if snow lingers in the high…

Apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us? Well, in a spot of neighbourly boundary reinforcement they built a ruddy great wall across northern England to keep the Ancient Britons out (although there’s no suggestion they made them pay for it). When construction began in AD122, Emperor Hadrian’s wall marked the most northern extent of the Roman Empire. Nineteen hundred years later and such divisions are unnecessary – the whole of the UK gets along swimmingly, don’t we? But the route of the wall from the River Tyne in the east to the Solway Firth in the west has been immortalised as one of Britain’s best-loved long distance paths. The problem…

Well, the easy bit first: cwm is pronounced coom (to rhyme with boom). As for what one is, well... that’s not overly complicated, either. A cwm is essentially a big, rounded bowl cut into the side of a mountain. They’re created by a glacier that carves a big erosion scoop out of the rock as it grinds downhill. They tend to be relatively open on the downhill side where the glacier escaped the mountain, but contained by steep cliffs around the uphill sides where the ice eroded the ground as it left. Cwms often contain lakes on their floor, and a prime example is Cwm Idwal in Snowdonia, with Llyn Idwal cupped within its bowl. In fact, cwm is a Welsh word for this landscape feature. One straightforward way to reach the summit of Bleaklow is to follow the Pennine Way up from Snake Pass – but it’s hardly the most exhilarating route. This classic Peak District scramble takes you straight from woodland to gully, lifting you straight onto the peaty plateau. You’ll need to take some care over your navigation to find the stake-marked summit, which even in good weather can be elusive. The scramble itself can be greasy, requiring skill and some confidence, though most hand- and footholds are secure. Back off from anything you feel uncomfortable with, or use a rope if you know how to. It’s undeniable that Snowdon is a busy mountain at the best of times, because tourists flock there to stand on the highest mountain in Wales. There are eight routes to choose from, all of varying difficulties, but the south ridge is up there as one of the best – for good reason. It’s not as exposed as Crib Goch, but there’s still a tiny bit of scrambling involved. The views are spectacular on a clear day and, arguably best of all, it‘s incredibly quiet. On a stormy night in 1899, Lynmouth‘s coastguard was informed of a stricken vessel in the Bristol Channel. Unable to launch the lifeboat from the wave-ravaged beach, the crew and 20 horses pulled it up and over Countisbury Hill – 1,000ft of ascent – to launch from Porlock Weir. This walk traces their footsteps along a stretch of the South West Coast Path. Foreland Bothy, on the northernmost point of Devon, awaits – along with a sunset if you’re lucky. Day two follows Badgworthy Water through the deep green of the Doone Valley. Design The jacket should be designed to work while wearing gloves and a rucksack. Ideally you should be able to pull the cuffs down over the gloves to stop water getting in when walking. But when scrambling it’s best if you can fit gloves over the cuffs. Take your gloves into the shop to make sure you can operate all the drawcords, zips, press studs, stormflaps and pockets with them on. Inner tent You sleep inside the inner tent, so it needs to be dry and spacious. There must be a gap between the inner and the flysheet, so that any condensation on the underside of the flysheet doesn’t soak into the inner tent. If the inner and outer touch, avoid the tent as the inner will get very wet from condensation. Single-skin tents are very lightweight, but as they don’t have a separate inner tent the occupants run the risk of coming into contact with condensation on the inside of the flysheet. In Great Britain, we are fortunate to have the best maps for walking in the world, and all due to the creation of our national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey (OS), on 21 June 1791. Originally all Ordnance Survey mapping used Imperial measurements: miles, yards, feet and inches. Today they all use the much simpler metric system (kilometres, metres and centimetres) and we also have access to other excellent maps available from Harvey Maps. The tricky part: map scales! Located between Torver and Broughton lies an extensive area of wetlands known as Blawith Common. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its variety of important habitats, it‘s also home to Woodland Fell which offers peace and tranquillity. This lovely, secluded place makes for an excellent circuit, starting and finishing from the small village of Water Yeat near Torver, and offers up some of the finest views in the area. After leaving the peace and quiet of Water Yeat behind, walkers first seek out the picturesque Beacon Tarn, which makes the perfect place for a rest before tackling the highest point of the route, Beacon fell. Cat Bells is a 'Marmite' mountain. Its enticing and shapely silhouette lures many an unwary novice from the shores of Derwent Water up its slopes, only for them to gain a rude appreciation that even low-lying Lakes fells can be rather steep in places. Conversely, many an experienced walker ignores it as 'just a tourist hill' – too low and busy to be worth bothering with. But don’t leave it just to the tourists! It’s a lovely hill with some great rocky entertainment and fabulous views. When it comes to the Orkneys, Hoy is the highlight. Some do it in a day, with a snapshot pic of the Old Man and a hurried taxi ride back to the Stromness ferry. Waterproofness If the upper is made of one piece of leather, or is relatively stitch-free, the boot will be as waterproof as most people will require – particularly if it is made of thick leather. Boots that are covered in stitching or those made with synthetic materials will leak more easily and are more prone to wear, while a waterproof lining such as Gore-Tex will make the boot waterproof. Uppers Stiff uppers are better for rocky ground and winter use, and they allow crampon straps to be comfortably fitted. Softer uppers are more comfortable and so are best for valley walking where less support and protection is required than on rocky mountains. Length The same sock design will often come in different lengths. For hillwalking a medium-length sock that comes to the bottom of the calf is commonly preferred. But you may prefer a knee-length sock if you often wear shorts or just want extra warmth. Short socks may seem ideal in summer but they may not fully cushion your foot against a boot’s high ankle cuff. So choose socks that at least protect against the ankle cuff of your footwear. When inspired to picture the perfect Lakeland landscape, the image you come up with probably has Cat Bells in it. It’s the hooky-comely-gentle-slightgnarly-but-oh-so-photogenic summit that arcs above Derwent Water so charismatically. Its name kind of suggests something feline and cuddly, though it probably comes from cat bields , meaning ‘shelter of the cat’ and likely refers to the very un cuddly wildcats of yore. It’s popular with youngsters and their parents as an ideal first hill, packing as it does a marvellous combination of achievability, aesthetic, terrific view and... er, silly name. Many mountain routes have a steep uphill at the start. Few, however, have a former tramway (from Honister to Dubs Quarries) to ease the initial ascent. In addition, the high-level path to Haystacks from the Drum House loses far less unnecessary height than the usual route via Dubs Bottom. This is also a great area to spot a rare species of Alpine butterfly – the mountain ringlet. It’s claimed to be our only species of true mountain butterfly, and the Fleetwith meadow below Grey Knotts is one of its known breeding colonies. This challenging walk takes in some of the the most 'primitive' scenery in the Hebrides, where the terrain is varied, but demanding. To cross the island from road end to Glengarrisdale bothy requires competent navigation, and it‘s fiendishly boggy at times. Heading north along the coast from Glengarrisdale makes for tough going, which is well worth negotiating to see shores and glens teeming with wildlife, and remarkable geological features adorning ruggedly beautiful coastline. Returning eastwards across the island through Glen Trosdale requires careful map-reading to reach the track road near Barnhill. “It's a truly wild mountainscape.” The peaks of the northern Carneddau are a world apart from other mountains in Snowdonia. They are characterised by gentler profiles, comfortable corries and spacious ridges instead of the more normal jagged and craggy outlines found elsewhere in the area.
