What? The AIP diet is a much stricter version of the classic paleo diet, designed to relieve symptoms of autoimmune disorders, like gut inflammation.
How? Followers avoid foods that have an inflammatory effect, such as meat, fish, vegetables, green tea and non-seed herbs like basil and mint. Dairy foods and processed goods are also off the menu.
Why? The AIP diet stems from the ‘leaky gut’ theory – AKA altered intestinal permeability – which is the hypothesis that small holes in the gut cause food to leak into the body, sending the immune system into overdrive, attacking body cells in error. As such, the diet prioritises nutrient-rich foods and avoids inflammatory ones, such as sugar, refined flour and artificial additives, in order to help the gut ‘heal’. We remain sceptical…
