Hoka One One and Montane athlete Marcus Scotney (pictured above) explains how to prepare: “Train on terrain similar to the race, and focus on learning to run slowly to build up aerobic endurance, increase muscle strength and use fat as fuel,” he advises. “I did 10,000-20,000ft of ascent each week, with two 10-20mile runs during the week and a 35-37mile run at weekends, all in heart rate zones 1-2. I also recommend 5-10min strength and conditioning (S&C) work daily, including single and side leg raises, clams, bridges, cobras, supermans, bicep curls, flyes, trap shrugs and arm swings.”
