In March 2013 T&C descended on the desert of Scottsdale, Arizona, to photograph a collection of spring looks inside Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter retreat and studio, Taliesin West. The legendary architect designed hundreds of homes around the country (one of them, an oceanfront gem in Carmel-by-the-Sea, recently sold for $22 million), but this wonder had a special place in his heart. Originally constructed in 1937 on more than 500 acres, Taliesin West also served as the base for the Taliesin Fellowship, Wright’s community of apprentices (it later evolved into the School of Architecture). Today the property, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and, best of all, is open to the public. Take a tour of the sprawling estate and stay for the…
WHERE ARE WE GOING? For golfers of the highest caliber, there is no holy grail like the Masters, held each year at Augusta National in Georgia. While the $2 million prize is nice, the real bragging rights here is that green jacket, reserved for winners of the tournament and members of the club, among them Warren Buffett and Condoleezza Rice. Want one? Augusta is invite-only—you can try eBay. APRIL 6–9, MASTERS.COM WHAT ARE WE WEARING? Precision is a virtue in any sport, but especially in golf, where every stroke counts. Getting onto a stage as vaunted as the Masters means nothing if you can’t deliver—on the green, of course, but sartorially, too. The Rolex Day-Date, with its triple display, is a paragon of accuracy and a perfect way to manifest…
Rule No. 1 Embrace the crazy. Who in their right mind would buy a half-restored, 140-year-old wooden schooner that hadn’t been afloat for three decades? What would you do with such a vessel? Brothers Alex and Miles Pincus didn’t have answers to these questions when they set out to purchase the 133-foot Coronet.“It’s the most important historical yacht in existence,” Alex says. “We just knew we’d figure something out.” A prime example of Gilded Age luxury boatbuilding, the Coronet was commissioned by a Brooklyn oil tycoon who challenged anyone to beat him in a race across the Atlantic (he won). The Pincuses, who co-own the nautical-themed hospitality company Crew, have already rescued a small fleet of important historical vessels, turning some of them into restaurants (including Manhattan’s Grand Banks). In…
ARIES MARCH 21–APRIL 20 Your ruling planet, mighty Mars, is passing through the vulnerable, watery sign of the Crab, so you may be feeling a bit off your stride this month. Some emotional turbulence is in the air, and personal issues demand attention. Still, you will experience some stellar moments when your confidence and leadership abilities are allowed to shine. Financially, it’s time to carefully take stock. GRAFF, GRAFF.COM TAURUS APRIL 21–MAY 21 Critical decisions are in the air as April starts. You need to ask yourself where you stand on various issues, and with the Sun in a behind-the-scenes part of your chart until the 20th, don’t hesitate to give yourself some precious private time. If others aren’t on the same page, give them time to come around. You’re…
And, judging by how booked hotels are, you are too. We all have our favorites, the places we return to again and again, where they know us and we know them. We keep those classics in another list. This is a rather scientific survey of the best of the new: places that opened in the last two years (mostly). Tricky times, but exciting as well. Our methodology can be found on page 61. But here is the underlying factor: All the hotels listed are where we would want to stay too. See you there?…
Welcome to your jewelry shopping enabler. The Johri at Lal Haveli, Jaipur This transformed 19th-century upper crust house is the creation of Siddharth Kasliwal, ninth-generation co-owner of India’s famed and oldest jewelry store, the Gem Palace. Conveniently, it is steps from the Johri Bazaar, aka the jewelry market, and its five large suites (there’s also a courtyard restaurant and bar) are a serene blend of heritage and modernity, in shades of their namesake treasures. We love the Neelam (sapphire). But why not book all of them and have a shopping party? Two top spots in one of the world’s alpha capitals. Casa Polanco and the Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City It’s a toss-up. The intimate new 19-room Casa Polanco sits on Lincoln Park, close to much of the best shopping in its eponymous…
