2016 THE LION ATREST David Rockefeller, who died on March 20 at the age of 101, towered in many fields: urban development, art, banking, and, of course, philanthropy. It was for the last that T&C interviewed him last year at his family’s estate on Mount Desert Island, Maine. After photographs were shot outdoors with his son David Jr. and granddaughters Ariana and Camilla, David Sr. posed for a solo portrait inside a small private residence on the property. This image, which has never been published before, captures him in a moment of pure ease, surrounded by art and artifacts, in a place he loved.…
I’m not sure when exactly I started going to Shakespeare in the Park religiously, but it pleases me greatly to look at the collage above and note that I saw every one of these productions, save Meryl Streep’s legendary 1976 turn as Katherine in Henry V. I will be there again this summer to see Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and if I’m lucky enough to be there on opening night I will also get to see Oskar Eustis take the stage. He speaks, sometimes clad in a seersucker suit, about Public Theater founder Joseph Papp’s belief that theater is a need and a right for all, and Eustis is himself a powerful preacher for the religion of the theater. He believes in its capacity to change the…

TRAVELING SHOW PEOPLE, PLACES, AND PARTIES One night last April, while on assignment in Tokyo for T&C, I was walking through the narrow alleyways of Ginza en route to a friend’s favorite yakitori-nabe restaurant (a nearly century-old establishment where businessmen feast on self-cooked meat and smoke openly between courses), when I was almost blinded by the multistory signage of a Max Mara store that occupies the first two floors of a recently built mall. Myriad new buildings have popped up in the city’s oldest district, but something struck me about the store, and over a dinner of tsukune (chicken meatballs), I described the experience to my companion. A Tokyo native who works at a popular fashion magazine, Mihoko nodded her head and told me that in Japan Max Mara is…
