June 2023 saw San Francisco thrash titans Metallica return to UK shores for the first time since 2019, with not one but two headline sets at metalhead mecca Download Festival. Over 100,000 fans made the pilgrimage to the hallowed grounds of Donington Park to celebrate the festival’s 20th anniversary, which began nine years after the iconic Monsters of Rock ended in 1996.
Metallica adhered to a strict ‘no repeats’ rule across their two performances, treating fans to an onslaught of material that included career-best highlights Master Of Puppets, Enter Sandman, Seek & Destroy, One and Sad But True, as well as choice cuts Battery, Ride The Lightning, Whiplash, Fuel, and a number of tracks from the band’s latest album, 72 Seasons.
