We’re conscious here at Spotted that sometimes we get a little carried away. Yes, we’re always on the lookout for special and interesting 911s, but we’re also guilty of going all-in when finding them. Porsche sets out its 2024 motorsport plan In the absence of the 911 RSR, Porsche is gearing up for an action-packed season of motorsport this year, both on the track and in simulators Porsche has established its goals for the forthcoming 2024 motorsport season. Following the retirement of the 911 RSR the marque will focus its factory racing efforts on a variety of motorsport activities, including Formula E, the World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, with Manthey Racing continuing to play an important role. HISTORY AND TECH In spring 2003, production of the second-generation GT3 began. Normally, this would serve as homologation of the 996 GT3 R competition version, but there were some detail changes Porsche wished to make to the racing specification, largely to the rear suspension. The GT3 R’s handling was compromised by excess camber angles, which meant the rear tyres didn’t stay absolutely flat on the tarmac. Overcoming this by fitting competition-specific hub carriers and suspension arms would require a separate homologation. Roland Kussmaul, who under Hartmut Kristen effectively ran the Motorsport department, proposed a run of 200 special GT3s for this purpose, but his protégé, Andreas Preuninger, now manager, High Performance Cars, came up with a more sophisticated proposition. Strangely, Porsche’s domination of Group C in the 1980s seems almost to have been forgotten, unlike the 917’s crushing victories in 1970/71 that are regularly celebrated. Perhaps Group C never captured the popular imagination in the same way as Le Mans does. Porsche’s virtual takeover of this championship series came about when Motorsport was being wound down and the 911 had already been written out of the script by Ernst Fuhrmann, who only permitted the development the 924 GTR. This was an unpopular move both inside and outside Porsche, and contributed to Ernst’s departure. Where’s the 992.2? Dear Sir, Having followed the Porsche brand for years, I’d like to think I’m well versed with how the company does things. Particularly when it comes to the timing of its 911 model releases. It’s the norm now to expect a new 911 generation every four years, be it a mid-life facelift or a whole new platform. Modified Porsche 964 At face value, it looks like a normal Porsche 964: a quintessential Guards red example of the third-generation 911. A knowledgeable enthusiast may then spot the fact that it’s been lowered, running something akin to RS-spec in its ride height; or the fact there are two exhaust exits rather than the usual one. A very keen eye may also take note of the wheels which, although their five-spoke appearance mimics the 17-inch Cup wheel found on 964 RS’s, deviates from factory spec thanks to the presence of a centre-locking nut. Scandinavian roadtrip Going on a roadtrip can be one of the most enjoyable motoring pastimes, especially when you get to drive some excellent cars. Last year we gathered a group of Porsche enthusiasts and headed north to Stekenjokk, a wonderful place in northern Sweden. The trip was a success and so we felt we had to do it again.
