Rare shades Dear Sir, I had to do a double take when I opened the latest T911 and read the piece on the bulletproof 996. I was ready to put money on it being Ipanema blue metallic, the same as our C4 GTS, until I read the colour description: Dragonfly turquoise metallic. They are so close, and nearly 20 years apart! Ipanema blue is a pretty rare colour in the UK with perhaps only five (or less) 911s in this colour. From what I’ve read (in my 911 Red Book) Ipanema blue was only available at the very end of the 997 production cycle and possibly spilled over and was still an option for the earliest 991s. When it was launched some three years ago, Porsche stated the 992 was based on the platform of the 991 before it (much like the 997 was on the 996 before that). However, the 992’s changes are substantial, particularly under the surface. Porsche increases stake in Rimac Zuffenhausen now owns 24% of electric supercar manufacturer Porsche has invested further funds in the manufacturer of electric supercars, Rimac Automobili, upping its share from 15% to 24% of the Croatian company. Aside from its own supercar production programme, Rimac also specialises in high-tech components for electromobility, including high-performance drives and battery systems, which has proved most useful to Porsche. This latest investment is the third time Porsche has sought to intensify its relationship with Rimac, first investing in 2018 and then increasing its stake to 15% in 2019. 1968 Model Year Launched in August 1967 (A programme) to replace the 912 as a base model. It had an identical bodyshell to the S with different external sill mouldings and steel wheels instead of the new 4.5x15-inch Fuchs fitted to the S. A four-speed gearbox was standard with five-speed available as an option, and was fitted without a front anti-roll bar and cast-iron front calipers when the S used light alloy ATE items. Launched with a 2.0 901/03 engine (901/13 with Sportomatic gearbox fitted) with cheaper cast-iron cylinders and a crankshaft without counter balancing for the big end carriers. HISTORY AND TECH The 997 is often described as a reskin of the 996, which is true to a point – the two cars shared the same chassis, but it rather understates the extent of the changes Porsche made to suspension mountings and running gear as well as the 997 body itself, which inherited not a panel from its predecessor; with a Cd of 0.28 it was also more aerodynamic than the 0.30 of the 996. The last year of the swinging Sixties is a noteworthy year for the 911 too, as in August Porsche introduced the ‘C Series’, which brought a stretch of 2.2 inches (57mm if you’re metric) to the wheelbase, in a bid to counter the 911’s on-limit behaviour.
