Singer announces DLS production switch to Multimatic Production of Dynamics & Lightweighting Study to remain in UK Singer founder Rob Dickinson has revealed the company’s highly anticipated DLS cars will still be built in the United Kingdom, albeit with Multimatic rather than Formula One outfit Williams. As was reported in our 200th special issue, guest edited by Dickinson himself, the company was in the final build stages of the first five DLS cars. HISTORY AND TECH In Porsche nomenclature, ‘S’ usually denoted sporting or ‘Super’ and its first application to a 911 was in 1966. The 911S would set the standard as the fastest 911 until the 2.7RS usurped its crown, and the S was demoted to second fiddle before it disappeared in 1976. Subsequently there was a 911CS (Clubsport) and a 911RS (Rennsport) and even a Turbo S, but a plain 911 with an S, in this case ‘Carrera S’, had to wait for the mid-term facelift 993 in 1996. PANAMERICANA CONCEPT The Panamericana – given to Ferry Porsche for his 80th birthday in 1989 – was the result of a curiosity from within Porsche to look at the off-road market. Originally designed to take on the Carrera Panamericana, a famous race across Mexico which the company dominated in the 1950s, the Panamericana featured long travel suspension as well as an early nod to 993-generation body styling. Since 1974, the Turbo has stood at the pinnacle of the 911 range as the ultimate do-it-all super sports car. Boasting big power and a lavish spec (the original 930 had few options because most came as standard) without compromising on practicality, the Turbo was viewed at the time as the 911 in its ultimate form, and has been admired by enthusiasts ever since.
