Porsche reveals first electric race car ‘99X’ single seater will compete in Formula E for upcoming debut season Porsche has unveiled its first all-electric sports car ahead of its competitive bow into Formula E later this year. Two of the open-cockpit, single-seater race cars, named the 99X, will compete in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship beginning in November, piloted by works drivers Neel Jani and André Lotterer. When the last drop of petrol has run out and historians write the definitive history of the combustion engine, Porsche’s flat six will undoubtedly feature extensively: few if any engines evolved so effectively over 60 years. What the historians will also show is that for decades manufacturers got away with making what they always had. Many pre-war engine designs, notably British, French and American, lasted well into the 1960s. Germany, on the other hand, with the strongest engineering tradition, had the advantage – if you can call it that – of starting from scratch in 1945, and also in having Daimler Benz, an engineering powerhouse. It was a warm, early evening on Sicily, and Campofelice, a small town on the northern coast, came at just the right time for a much-needed caffeine hit. Online commentators began calling it ‘the massacre of Monterey’ after what turned out to be a pretty disastrous week for sellers of classic and collector-grade Porsche.
