If I had any tip for other people starting out running it’s this: don’t be scared. No one’s watching you. I think a lot of people lack confidence because they don’t know what to do, or they need to go with someone else, or someone might laugh at them. But actually, everyone’s so self-obsessed and locked into what they’re doing, they won’t look at you. If I was to see someone running, I wouldn’t know they’d just started. ‘I loved reading Gail Muller’s article [May issue] in which she told us how she’d been told by doctors to give up hope of finding a cure for her chronic pain, and that she may have to use a wheelchair, and how she defied their prognosis to seek help and get better. Q My friends are talking about taking testosterone. Should I be adding testosterone to my HRT? A Testosterone is an important hormone for women as well as men. Your ovaries make three hormones – oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone, so replacing all three makes sense. Testosterone helps with mood, motivation, focus, concentration, burning fat, building muscle energy and libido, and improves bone density. Current guidelines for hormone replacement therapy say women should start on oestrogen and progesterone first, as sometimes taking oestrogen can boost testosterone levels through conversion. Blood test levels should then be checked before starting testosterone. Often women worry about getting acne and greasy skin or hair loss with testosterone, but I start my patients on a low dose, often one-tenth or less of what I would give a…

GET MIDLIFE EXERCISING! Stay active or get active now to boost your quality of life while ageing, a study suggests to midlife women. Data from more than 10,000 Australian women showed a significant link between regular exercise during middle age and physical health in later life. Researchers used data from women aged 47-52 years old at the study start. Participants were classified as either meeting WHO physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes of activity a week consistently throughout the 15-year exposure period, not initially meeting the guidelines but starting to meet them at age 55, 60 or 65, or never meeting the guidelines. Physical and mental health were then assessed. On average, those who consistently met physical activity guidelines and those who first started to meet guidelines at age 55…
