BEHIND THE QUILT COSY ON UP! “The Log Cabin is a classic quilt block used in so many layouts to create different designs. Although the fabrics in this quilt are from one Liberty Christmas line, there are enough colours and designs of prints to give a scrappy effect. In this quilt, I have used one red print for the block centres and one neutral print for half the logs in each block. Introductions I’m delighted to be returning for my third Block of the Month series. My previous BOMs have been more like a mystery quilt, as nobody knew what the final quilt would look like, including me! So, this time I am more organised and can reveal the whole quilt design at the start. I can also share the full fabric requirements, something readers asked for in the past. BEHIND THE QUILT JINGLE BELLS “I made a Christmas Ball quilt a couple of years ago, where I had dozens of mice in ball gowns waltzing around a dark-blue patchwork quilt. It’s one of my favourites and I had the opportunity this year to make a tree skirt to match it! I’ve used a similar colour scheme but this time I have some larger woodland animals decorating the tree with bells, coloured lights and even candy canes. INSPIRATION Raw-edge, needle-turn, freezer paper, fusible, satin stitch, zig-zag, straight stitch, etc… the options for appliqué are endless. Yet some quilters discard learning appliqué because they tried one technique and didn’t like it. Remember, there are no quilt police – do what makes you happy. Try different techniques, mix them up or create your own. This month, I will share the techniques I use… what style, method, stitch and why.
