“Part of my freelance work is as a Technical Editor for Tilda and, as soon as I saw the beautiful Woodland collection of fabrics, I knew I wanted to make a quilt using it. Tilda’s Tone Finnanger was kind enough to send me the fabrics from the collection so I could design and make to my heart’s content. The result is this quilt, which imagines a starlit night in Norway, surrounded by fir trees. The on-point layout allows the blocks to ‘float’ amid the dark-blue fabric. “The Astra fabric line by British fabric designer Janet Clare for Moda Fabrics takes us on a tour of the night sky. The prints, which are in blues, greys and creams, work well for simple designs such as the classic pineapple block. When using any classic quilting blocks to design a quilt, the fun is in creating new patterns from the elements in the block – in the case of this quilt, there are sixteen interlocking circles that appear when the blocks are all laid out. “This quilt is one that ticks lots of boxes for me. It uses up scraps and it is stitched with a Quilt-As-You-Go (QAYG) technique, which means the blocks are quilted as you stitch them on the sewing machine. You can also add extra quilting afterwards. The technique makes the process of quilt-making more manageable as it can be done in small spaces and small amounts of time. Just sew up a block when you have a moment. Another nice thing about this particular quilt design is, depending on which way you hold the finished square, the design can look quite different. Lynette Warren was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was here that her love for quilting began. Lynette began quilting in 1996, shortly before her move to Georgia the same year. It was there, her love developed into a passion. She is an avid quilter and has been shown across the United States. This method of joining Stitch and Flip blocks together is great for any quilt-as-you-go blocks that are quilted all the way up to the raw edges. The resulting finish is just like a normal seam on the front of the quilt and has a strip of fabric covering the seams on the back of the quilt. The fabric strips can be the same fabric to blend in or contrast for a different look. Equally, they could be cut from completely different fabrics for a very scrappy look and great for using up odd ends. “My favourite Star block is the Ohio Star, so I had fun playing around with it in two ways in this quilt. I enjoyed using scale to change the look of the two different stars, as well as the construction of the bigger stars to incorporate more complex piecing. As ever, I also enjoy mixing scrappy piecing with some uniformity to give the eye gentle rest areas. Using the pale pinks for the miniature stars really does ease the eye while it can take in all the details of the large stars. For the cushion that Linda made, a tree block can be arranged in an upright position by adding triangles to the sides, as follows. Make the tree block as described in the quilt project. Add corner triangles as follows. Measure the finished diagonal of the block (for a 10in finished block this will be 10 x 1.414 = 14.14in or 14⅛in). Divide this measurement by 2 = 7in and add 0.875 (or ⅞in) = 7⅞in (round this up to an 8in square). Cut a square this size and then sub-cut it into two (2) triangles. Repeat with another square. What is your creative space like? I’m very lucky to have a bright, colourful textile studio situated in my garden. At the far end of the room are shelves where bolts and larger cuts of fabrics are housed, below which is a long, high cutting table. Underneath the table are fabric storage boxes, which are efficiently stacked on handy trollies. My sewing machine, which is set in a low table, faces the large front windows, and my ironing board is against the wall behind it as it’s good to get up and move around.
