As I sit writing this, I am looking longingly out the window at a glorious day. It’s taken summer a little while, but she is starting to show her pretty face. We have tried to capture a small piece of this summer magic in this issue, from a charming quilt featuring Dresden daisies to a stunning tile-inspired design, which uses large flower blocks to great effect. We are also delighted to be showing not one but two designs by Pam and Nicky Lintott, featuring the fabric line, Dutch Heritage 1930’s. Ever mindful not to waste any fabric, they have come up with a clever plan to use leftover HSTs from one quilt to make the second. ■ Place the fabric circle WS up on an aluminium foil square that’s around 1in bigger than your fabric circle. ■ Place the matching card template on top and carefully enclose it in the foil, pressing tightly all the way round. Press both sides of this foil packet well, using your iron on the highest setting. ■ Carefully (it will be hot!) unwrap your foil and take out your fabric circle. ■ If required, carefully give your folded edges another press. Using a spray starch before wrapping can also be helpful.…

■ Pick a few fabrics of different colours, preferably a dark, medium and very light of one colour. ■ Cut two of your fabrics and join the pieces together. Then cut another and join that. Keep going in the same way, making your decisions one step at a time. Don’t think about it, just get comfortable with randomly cutting and sewing. ■ To start with, restrict yourself to constructing a square, say 6–10 inches when trimmed. ■ You don’t have to make it complicated – simple improv can look great too. “This design was inspired by some beautiful Victorian floor tiles that I’d seen in a hallway. The blocks are nice and large so can be constructed with ease! Before the borders are added, all of the edges of the quilt are ‘on the bias’ so this just needs a bit of care and attention so the top sits nice and flat. “For the last few years, I’ve been designing new quilts for Today’s Quilter by reinterpreting a traditional quilt pattern and adding needle-turn appliqué elements. This year, I’ve chosen the Dresden Plate block. This block has a special place in my heart as it was my first ever quilting magazine commission! The simple yet elegant design never fails to charm and is incredibly versatile. Usually, the circular centre would be made of a different fabric, but I’ve chosen to emphasise the ring element and leave the centre free for some appliqué. Summer is finally here and I, for one, am thrilled to be swapping jumpers and umbrellas for summer dresses. It is preferable to work one block at a time. Once the units for each block are made and partially sewn together, they need to be set aside until all blocks are ready to be sewn. The quilt is sewn together row by row, so it is not until everything is decided upon that sewing the rows can begin. This unfinished piece of mosaic patchwork uses the Jockey Cap design, with a quartered circle set within a square block. The colourful and interesting range of printed cottons remain in excellent condition as the piece was never completed, showing a beautiful range of prints and colours that were available. Interestingly, the piece has been constructed in two distinct phases, with the central section made from slightly larger blocks and older fabric prints, and the surrounding smaller blocks created and added at a later date, possibly by a different maker. There are also nine unused constructed blocks, which were completed but not added to the main piece, and these are still separate. This pattern uses needle-turn appliqué – if hand stitching isn’t your thing, feel free to use raw-edge appliqué for the daisies using your machine and the instructions below: ■ Using the inner broken lines on your templates, trace pattern pieces onto the paper side of some fusible web. ■ Press fusible web, paper side up, onto the WS of your fabric. ■ Carefully cut out the shape using small sharp scissors and peel away the paper.
