Sweeter than honey I just finished my latest quilt for a friend’s baby. Lanagh, my friend, was known as Lanagh Pooh when she was little and the name stuck, so I thought I would design this quilt, featuring characters from Winnie the Pooh, for her little piglet! Piglet is created using raw-edge appliqué and the rest is free motion quilting. On the reverse, I made the label into a sleeve, so if they don’t want to use it as a quilt, it can be hung up. “The traditional Basket block takes many different forms and I’ve always enjoyed exploring them. I produced two different versions for my ‘A Month in the Country’ BOM sampler quilt for this magazine a few years back, but I’ve always wanted to make a full quilt of basket blocks and was inspired by a vintage quilt I saw at QuiltCon 2019 as part of the Childress Collection. This quilt had baskets made of half-square triangles with big hooped handles, with the blocks facing in all different directions. I tried the same with this quilt, but it needed a little more order so the baskets only face in two directions. The Summer House collection was inspired by orangeries, which were outdoor rooms that became popular with Northern European families between the 17th and 19th centuries. They were used to grow fruits and plants that would have otherwise not survived the British winter. Citrus fruits were particularly popular plants at this time and feature heavily in the range. What was it about 17th and 19th century orangeries that made them so appealing to your team? We were drawn to the Victorian detailing that we saw in the orangeries, the decorative ironwork and the geometric floor tiles as well as the idea of all the exotic fruits and plants that would have been growing in these spaces. A quick look through any block directory will reveal a wealth of pictorial blocks for you to try. My go-to book is one by Jinny Beyer called The Quilter’s Album of Patchwork Patterns, but there are plenty of others out there too. Once you start to analyse the appearance of picture blocks, you will find that many of them use straightforward piecing techniques, which most of us are already familiar with. ■ Use the same fabric for each ‘round’ to keep the box-like look of the block. ■ You can use different width strips for the left and right-hand sides of the same round to create an asymmetric block. ■ Always add the strips in the same order, i.e. left-hand side, top edge, right-hand side. ■ Don’t use strips cut less than ¾in wide or you’ll be left with next to nothing! You could cut your strips slightly wider than you think you need to allow for trimming or or squaring up. ■ Don’t plan your blocks too much – embrace the unexpectedness of improvisation! ■ Make different size blocks by varying the size/ orientation of the ‘centre’ rectangle and the width of the strips. ■ Make blocks with more than…

■ Always use small, very sharp (preferably micro serrated) scissors to cut out the fabric shapes to give the best finish. ■ For a little more control, try quilting gloves. An extension table can also help to keep your work flat and a Teflon sheet will give a smoother glide. ■ When sat at your sewing machine, your arms should be at right angles when stitching. ■ Before starting to sew, use Bondaweb to attach a scrap of fabric onto background fabric with interfacing or batting underneath (whichever your project specifies). Practise stitching to get into the flow, to ensure that your machine is threaded properly and your stitch tension is correct. VICTORIANA COSTUME PARTY Quilters with an interest in period costume are in for a treat this summer, as one of Queen Victoria’s most glamorous surviving dresses – her costume for the Stuart Ball – dated 1851, goes on display at Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen Victoria’s Palace exhibition. The last few weeks have been truly wonderful with what I would call ‘a true, old-fashioned summer’. “We all know that one swallow does not a summer make, but surely eight swallows do? I’ve always loved Tree of Paradise quilts and have really wanted to design one since watching the recent ‘Alias Grace’ series on Netflix, in which Tree of Paradise quilts, among others, hold a prominent symbolism in the story. I decided to make four large blocks growing from the centre of the quilt to the outer borders, making for a bold and modern take on the traditional block.”…

“This collection features three of my all-time favourite Liberty fabrics – Oxford Fern, Hidcote Berry and Cambridge Fern. The collection is available in three colourways – blues, reds and of course greys, which is what I used for this quilt. I used white for the background, but I think you could easily work with a very soft pink or grey too. Make sure you keep an eye on how you cut your squares into triangles for your Pinwheel blocks – you don’t want your fabrics ending up in the wrong direction. I used the Conservatory Fruits fabric for the larger outer border as I thought it was just a perfect way to frame the quilt, and I also found the darker inner border highlighted this print even further. “The red, white and blue palette of this fabric line made me want to try a new design that combined traditional Log Cabin blocks with some stars to create a Log Cabin quilt with a 'stars and stripes' feel. There are no partial seams to create this effect – the pattern just contains basic piecing methods. The star blocks are inserted into the Log Cabin blocks, so some additional piecing was needed to create the joining sections. This piecing is the same in style as Log Cabin piecing, so it doesn’t make the quilt more advanced in construction, just slightly different. The competition categories at this year’s Festival of Quilts reflected the changing world of quilting, and visitors eagerly anticipated the addition of two new overlay categories which recognised the very different skills associated with both hand quilting and longarm quilting. The Fine Art Quilt Master category broadened its focus to welcome textile artists who, up until this year, may have felt excluded from entering this category because they don’t consider themselves to be quilters per se. The modern quilt category was also redefined to reflect the rapid growth of the modern quilt movement. “Pictorial blocks are great fun, and many can be created using a range of simple techniques”– Lin Clements The world of patchwork is filled with pictorial blocks, designed to represent familiar objects. Here, we look at how to make some favourites… WHAT ARE PICTORIAL BLOCKS? Pictorial blocks, or picture blocks, are patchwork blocks that aim to look like everyday objects. They may also be called representational blocks. Picture blocks can be created with appliqué techniques for the most life-like look. In this month’s Essential Guide, however, we will look at machine pieced blocks. Subjects featured in picture blocks are wide-ranging and commonly include buildings, trees, flowers, birds, animals and household objects (Fig 1 shows a few examples). The realism of picture blocks varies greatly, and simple shapes generally produce simplistic…

Many of the picture blocks I like look too complicated for my skills. Should I give it a go and hope for the best? Try this… Don’t be put off by difficult looking blocks – just change them to suit your skills. Blocks don’t have to be made exactly as the original. Some blocks can discourage us because they need templates or have oddly shaped triangles that we know are going to be difficult to get right, but these shapes can often be converted to shapes that are easier to piece. Fig 15A shows an example of a church block that has some tricky areas. It has equilateral and isosceles triangles in the steeple and roof, plus a trapezium – all of which are most successfully pieced with templates. However,…
