Houses and seasides Firstly, I’d like to wish a sincere thank you to all who have sent in blocks for my forthcoming July Quilt-athon. As some of you haven’t included your names, I’m saying a huge thank you here. My idea is that, while we have the Christopher Wilson-Tate antique quilt exhibition in the barn (13th-28th July), anyone who would like to help can come in and sew quilts in the workroom. I’ll provide the chocolate and cake and it should be fun to see what we can do with all the blocks. I’ve tried to make a diamond Log Cabin by sewing strips around a centre diamond, but the blocks didn’t fit together. Why did this happen? Try this… Shapes such as diamonds and triangles can easily distort as you add more strips, so the final block might not be a true diamond shape and therefore won’t fit together very well with other blocks. Try using a foundation paper piecing method, as this will produce an accurate block. The block described on page 48 can be pieced with similar blocks in various ways – Fig 7 shows some examples. The block can be pieced to form a hexagon, as in Fig 7A. To do this, sew two blocks together and then add the third block using a set-in (Y) seam. The block…

uilters are in for a treat this year as the American Museum & Gardens in Bath is showcasing 20 quilts designed by Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and their design team, alongside 18 historic quilts from the museum’s collection. Kaffe Fassett’s Quilts in America exhibition is inspired by the museum’s extensive collection of vintage American quilts and was the theme for his 20th project book published last year. Kaffe, Brandon and the team worked with Chief Curator Kate Hebert to select quilts from the museum’s collection. These treasures were then reimagined and recreated using fabrics designed by the team. “This colourful quilt uses just one Jelly Roll, with three different sized Dresden Plate blocks created from Jelly Roll strips. The Dresden Plates are rotary cut using the Creative Grids 30-degree triangle (CGRSG1), sewn by machine and then hand-stitched to the background squares – but you could machine stitch them in place if you prefer. Dresden Plates are not known for being the speediest design to make, but you will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly this quilt comes together using our quick tips and the ruler. You will by now have enough sampler blocks to stitch the first two rows of the quilt. If you have been using the quilt-as-you-go (QAYG) method, it means each row can be constructed and the gaps between the blocks quilted. In this way, when each row is complete they can then be stitched together in the same way. The instructions for making a row are below, and joining the rows will be at a future date. If you are quilting yours traditionally, you can still go ahead and join the first two rows together. There are several different methods for QAYG, but I find this one suits me best. “This quilt uses two blocks in a chequerboard pattern to create a secondary pattern between them – a classic technique for a traditional quilt. Using warm and cool colours in alternating blocks adds interest to the design. “Log Cabin is a traditional block, but remains hugely popular and can be pieced in many ways.”– Lin Clements There are various ways to create a Log Cabin block and this month we look at three different methods. THE LOG CABIN DESIGN The Log Cabin design is a very old, traditional block design that is loved the world over and is probably one of the best-known patchwork blocks. “The Lone Star is on many quilters’ bucket list and is steeped in history. It is known by a variety of names – Morning Star, Star of Bethlehem and Mathematical Star, to name a few. Usually, the diamonds are placed to create concentric circles of colour radiating out from the centre. I have designed this version to use scrap strips of fabric alternating with a neutral solid to give the star a twinkling effect. And for those quilters who don’t like ‘Y’ seams, the segments in this project are created in a way to avoid them!”…

“The design for this project is based on the idea of birds flying home in spring to nest and produce baby birds. Placing these migratory birds in a setting of patchwork rows symbolises the chain of generations following on one to another. And being a long rectangular shape, a table runner is somewhat like an airport runway, which further strengthens the theme of flight paths. I experimented with different types of Flying Geese units and eventually hit on the idea of making fractured Flying Geese units to represent the birds coming home, the blue sky and the hills in bloom with spring tulips for the central blocks. “Although there are lots of rounds in this frame quilt, as long as you stay organised this design is fairly straightforward to sew. Using ‘snowballing’ corners – also known as stitch-and-flip – is a great way to add triangles without worrying about stretchy bias seams. 1 When making the fractured Flying Geese units, during the point at which you are adding the sky and hill squares, draw a line parallel to the stitching line ½in closer to the corner of each square. Stitch on this line as well as the Flying Geese stitching line and then cut halfway between the two sewn lines (Fig 1). 2 You will have a total of thirty (30) geese/sky HST units and thirty (30) fractured geese/hills/sky HST units. 3 Take two (2) HST units and two (2) fractured HST units and arrange as shown in Fig 2. “This block uses some partial seam piecing to achieve the rotating star points. It’s a great technique that really opens up the types of patchwork blocks that you can stitch, and in some cases means you don’t have to do any set-in piecing. If you want to fussy-cut a large centre here, feel free, but if you want an extra challenge then we’ve given you the template (B) for a pieced centre. If you wish, you could fussy-cut template B to add further interest to the block. This block works well as a signature block, so if you’re thinking of signing and dating your quilt, this is a nice block to use for that.
