How is it almost December already? This year has whizzed past in a blur and now the weather is getting colder, the clocks have turned back and it’s dark every night when I get home from work! Luckily, there’s plenty of inspiration in this issue to keep me busy on these wintry evenings. Nicola Dodd’s delightful take on the traditional Flower Basket block is at the top of my list this month. Combined with the Nosegay block and worked in a fresh colour palette, it’s sure to brighten up any room on these dark evenings. HELP! I drew a template that has a triangle in one corner, but when I make several blocks and sew them together the triangle points don’t match up. Why not? Try this… If a shape has to match up with the same shape on another block then it’s important that the drawn shape is symmetrical. Look at your original template drawn on graph paper and check that each corner is exactly where it should be. You will probably find that one corner is a little off the line. It might not be by much but even ›/›in can make a difference. In Fig 11A, the top corner of the triangle has been drawn too tall, so the triangle is no longer symmetrical (count the squares). Instead of carrying a bulky sketchbook, Terry makes a mini-sketchbook from a single sheet of A4 paper, which is the perfect size to slip unobtrusively into her pocket. Terry often binds her A4-single-sheet books together to make one larger book, or she incorporates them into an existing sketchbook. Both are great for keeping the inspirations for a particular theme together. Take lots of photographs if you aren’t confident about drawing. There are apps that enable you to trace or play with images, and these can then be used in the process of creating your quilt design. Terry uses Paper53 and Adobe Sketch. You can also use these apps to audition quilting designs or to try out the placement of motifs on the background. If you are unsure about how to…

The fabric needs to be pressed tightly around the template otherwise the petals will not sit neatly in a circle. Use the tip and edge of the iron to work around the shape a tiny amount at a time. This will give you a nice smooth curve. To achieve a sketchy/doodling effect, Victoria stitched around each shape with a free-motion foot then very roughly went over the stitch line again. If you prefer a more formal look, just use a straight stitch. Victoria chose a contrasting thread to stitch around her petals in a “sketchy” naïve way. If you’d prefer your stitches to be more invisible, choose thread which tones with your fabric. The shapes could also be appliquéd by hand with slip stitch if you prefer a turned edge…

Using this stitch-and-flip method, you will discard the fabric from the corners. If you don’t want to waste the fabric, then as you draw the first diagonal line, draw another ½in away. When you stitch on the first line, stitch the second also. Cut down the middle of these two (2) lines and press the seams on the paired triangles open (Fig 5). Perhaps you were lucky enough to visit the 24th European Patchwork Meeting in Alsace, where she had a gallery and an audience of 24,000 visitors? “I’ve always loved bringing flowers into the house, whether it’s a bowl of garden roses, pots of forced bulbs or a flower-filled quilt. This block combines two traditional favourites, the Flower Basket and the Nosegay, but is pieced in an innovative way that avoids the inset seams and on-point setting of the originals. After 30 years teaching patchwork and quilting, Janice Gunner has decided to re-join the world of education and, over the next two years, is immersing herself in the study of textile culture, craft and design. An unexpected illness was the catalyst for Janice’s decision to enrol in the Master of Arts in Textiles course at the University of the Creative Arts. “This quilt started many years ago with a design that featured an Orange Peel block so I could practise my turned-edge appliqué technique. I added two other blocks – a Snowball block and a variation of an eight-point star block – and by playing around with the colour placement, I realised that I could create a secondary pattern where the Snowball blocks began to look spiky. I wanted the spiky Snowballs to be a vivid blue but just couldn’t find the right print. A solid fabric didn’t have the zing and colour saturation I wanted and eventually I decided that the sheen of silk dupion would give me the extra dimension I was after.”…

You can use the rotary cutter to make your blades – either cut a 5½in wide strip and nest the template along the strip, then use the rotary cutter to cut along each line; or cut 3¼in x 5½in strips and sub–cut from these (you can cut up to four at a time accurately with a sharp blade). If you prefer, you can reduce the bulk of your fan blocks by carefully trimming away the excess fabric from the back. This is more important if you have a dark background square and lighter blades or corners, or if you wish to hand quilt. THE QUILT BALTIMORE ALBUM For a quilt to be considered a true Baltimore Album quilt, it must have been made for, or by, someone living in Baltimore during 1846-1852. This magnificent quilt, housed in the American Museum & Gardens, is a beautiful example of a true Baltimore Album quilt. “This is one of those quilts that just makes you smile as it is so full of colour and movement. We used a Creative Grids Two-Peaks-in-One ruler, which made the cutting a breeze. You could also use a Tri-Recs or any other ruler that makes a 6in Triangle-in-a-square block. We also used the Creative Grids 45-degree/90-degree Triangle for creating Half-square Triangles from strips but you can use any other ruler that does this job. “We normally press our seams to one side but for this quilt we found that pressing our seams open helped. Most inspirational book(s) that have influenced your journey in textiles… Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing by Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada, Mary Kellogg Rice and Jane Barton. I had a friend’s copy on almost permanent loan for several years while I taught myself many of the techniques. It informed the extended study I did during the final year of my diploma and led me to write my own book on shibori. The Art of the Needle by Jan Beany is another book that has hugely influenced my journey in textiles. Textile artist Terry Donaldson grew up in the West Country and, as a child, she and her family spent many weekends and holidays at the beaches in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. “The coast is in my blood,” she declares. “I love nothing more than walking along the shore, especially on brisk spring and autumn days when they can be wonderfully solitary and windswept locations.” These days, Terry regularly visits Lyme Regis in Dorset, part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site that’s famous for its fossils. “I’m a born collector and so I always have pocketfuls of treasures,” she laughs. “This is a lovely appliqué project to make as a gift, or as an addition to your sewing space. It’s great for small ditsy fabrics, which you can colour coordinate, or simply use some of your scraps for a serendipitous look. I used free-motion stitching around the flower, but you could use a straight stitch or even a blanket stitch on your machine. “There are 13 lattice ‘filler’ blocks that connect the 12 sampler blocks in this quilt. There are three variations of the lattice block to choose from, so that you can make the quilt your own. The original is the Pennsylvania block (page 83), and the next two have slightly varying centres, all of which can be cut from Charm Squares. One has a Square-on-point, while the other has a small Sawtooth Star centre. You can decide on one variation for the whole quilt, or make some of each and use all three in your quilt.
