With another royal wedding nearly upon us what better time to bring out the commemorative mugs – I’ve had a soft spot for these ever since my mum bought me the Silver Jubilee mug back in the 1970s. I had in mind a large pint-sized mug for this block (the sort of mug my husband drinks his lapsang souchong from, incidentally). To make the mug more special there’s a decorative crown to embroider on the front. Feel free to embroider another flag or symbol if royalty isn’t your thing – you could also fussy cut something from your chosen fabric. “This quilt is based on a pattern called Lily of the Valley from the book 120 Patterns for Traditional Patchwork Quilts by Maggie Malone. The setting is taken from a quilt in a book called Soft Covers for Hard Times by Merikay Waldvogel. In the book, the quilt from the 1930s is called Four Tulips. There are lots of versions of this block and many of them are appliquéd. This one offers a lovely hand-piecing challenge, as there are both set-in and curved seams to master. “I have made all of these blocks by hand and then set them together on the sewing machine. When Kate Dowty relocated to the outskirts of a small market town in West Dorset in the early 2000s, it had a profound impact on her work as a textile artist. With a backdrop of farmland and hills, and just a couple of miles from the Jurassic Coast, the themes of Kate’s work soon became imbued with a sense of her surroundings. “I’ve always been influenced by place,” Kate tells us. “Prior to moving, holiday destinations were my main source of inspiration, but now that I have such a wealth of stimulating locations on my doorstep I no longer need to look further afield.” Kate is captivated by the changing colours of her environment, both with the rhythm of the seasons and even throughout the course of a day. “The…
