“How nice... to be able to iron an entire design onto fabric rather than struggle to trace it.” A few months ago I was exploring the unknown depths of the airing cupboard where I discovered evidence of early stitchery from my youth, carefully kept for posterity by my mother in her own airing cupboard and presumably moved over to mine after both my parents had died. Strangely, having now shown it at my Summer Schools as an interesting example of “modern” embroidery design from the late 1950s, it seems to have disappeared again… how odd is that? The Jacobs Ladder block has been around for many years. At its heart, it’s made of half-square triangles and squares. To create the series of ladders seen when the blocks are joined, you use two sharply contrasting colours, a dark and a light. The pieces are arranged in such a way as to create diagonal patterns of light and dark across the block. Other names the block is known as include Underground Railroad, Road to California, Off to San Francisco, Gone to Chicago and Stepping Stones.…

HELP! When making a Quarter-square Triangle block from Half-square Triangle units I don’t always manage to match up the centre seams. Is there a trick to this? Try this… It’s surprisingly easy to get this wrong. I find the following method works well. 1 Mark the line on the wrong side of the top Half-square Triangle unit, as normal. Place the units right sides together so that seam and top triangle points match. Use your left thumb to slightly pinch the units together ¼in above the marked line, i.e., where the sewing line will be (Fig 17A). 2 With your right forefinger peel back the top unit and check that its seam is in line with the seam of the unit beneath (Fig 17B). The Hampton Court Emporium occupies a commanding situation on the corner of the main street in East Molesey, Surrey. When we were given a preview of the some of the gorgeous quilts on display at forthcoming Grosvenor Quilt Shows, we were bowled over by The Coxwell Collection by Little Coxwell Quilters. Quilter and teacher Lynne Johnson, one of the founders of the group, shared some background to how this talented group of quilters came to be. “This design was originally known as Falling Star, but later became known as Flying or Circling Swallows. Circling Swallows is one of the more intricate eight-point star designs. These blocks are quite large at 19in square, so it will be easier to deal with the amount of pieces and setting in of the backgrounds. One would make a lovely centre to a medallion quilt, but here we have nine blocks with various floral fabrics as the background to the entire star, so it looks like the birds fly over gardens, as they do at our house. Each ‘swallow’ itself has a low-volume fabric as its background and, in this case, I’ve used a fabric printed with flying birds as a quirky note.”…

“Autumn Baskets quilt started with the basket fabric, this stunning fabric was perfect. The appliqué was taken from an older design, which I revamped to suit. The fabrics were from my stash, using a blend that worked in with the basket fabric. I loved the quirky mix of the autumn colour’s moving out into the Outside Border. Textile artist Leah Higgins is emphatic that to make unique and distinctive work you need to feel passionate about your source of inspiration. For many years, urban and industrial landscapes have captured her imagination. “I’m fascinated by human-made structures,” Leah enthuses, “I love nothing more than an industrial estate, especially one that has been abandoned and whose buildings are in a state of decay.” Indeed, looking back over her work, Leah can see that this broad topic has shaped many of her pieces over a long period of time. As we continue our rifle through the crockery cupboard we find another of my favourite items, a lovely bowl or dish. In fact, the initial inspiration for this quilt was a bowl shape. A few years ago I designed my first quilt for Today’s Quilter, which featured rows of dishes on shelves (Issue 3). It was such a successful design that I made another quilt expanding on the theme. My Crockery Cupboard quilt included jugs and tumblers too. I’m a big fan of recycling and I knew this idea had some legs still, which brings us to this BOM and our little journey around the Vintage Home.
