A century on and his legacy lives on and his work as a writer, poet, embroiderer, designer, calligrapher, dyer, weaver, architectural preservationist, socialist and publisher is still influential today. “I had forgotten the exhilaration of working just on the machine, and seeing a piece developing so quickly.” Here is an opener where I am unashamedly smug and rather proud of myself: I have been finishing off a couple of UFOs (for the uninitiated, that stands not for an alien invasion but Un-Finished Objects). This Jelly Roll quilt is a fun quilt to make and looks so effective with all the dark greys, blacks and accents of purple. The central part of the quilt was made with just one Jelly Roll. A black and white Jelly Roll was used, with additional fat quarters in shades of red and grey to add a touch of warmth. A border was added in black to set off the design. The quilting was done in grey thread in a swirl pattern and the curves complement the straight lines of the quilt, flowing from the main quilt across the border. As a naturally untidy person I do love a storage caddy. I like tucking things away safely in pretty containers. That way, it looks like I’m quite organised but instead I can never find anything as it’s all ‘safely’ hidden away. In the kitchen and the larder storage containers are crucial and often on display so it’s important that they look good too. William Morris was an English designer, writer and social activist. Devoted to decorative arts, a century of his legacy is all around us and he excelled as a writer, poet, embroiderer, designer, calligrapher, dyer, weaver, translator, architectural preservationist, socialist and publisher. On the occasion of his death, the socialist newspaper, The Clarion , printed this moving eulogy: “He was our best man. We cannot spare him; we cannot replace him. Red House was the home of the Morris family between 1860 and 1865. Regular visitors were Pre-Raphaelite artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti, his wife Elizabeth Siddal, Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown. At different times, Morris’s friends helped decorate walls, ceilings and items of furniture at the house with colourful wall paintings and decorative patterns inspired by their love of the medieval past. William Morris commissioned Philip Webb to design Red House in 1859. It was Webb’s first independent architectural work and Morris’s first and only commission. In 1860, after one year of construction, it was complete. In his design, Webb looked to the vernacular buildings of the Sussex and Kentish Weald and chose red brick for the fabric and red tiles for the roof. The windows were chosen to suit…

The best-preserved Arts and Crafts interior in Britain reopened after an 18-month restoration, which has ensured its preservation for future generations. “I love bargello quilts as it’s so easy to create dramatic effects with this type of patchwork. This design was inspired by the coastal geology of north Devon and mimics the way the earth’s crust folds in layers. In the design, different minerals are represented by the emerald and sapphire fabrics. As a contrast to the dark earth tones I interrupted the bargello with vertical contrast strips of white fabric, to create more impact. The white background is given more interest by alternating a white-on-white cotton fabric with a gleaming off-white silk dupion, which catches the light. After the wall hanging was finished I added linear clusters of seed beads in a few places, in gold and silver, and also sapphire and emerald, to look like pockets of precious stones…

In issue 18 of Today’s Quilter we featured Lucy Boston’s collection of beautiful patchworks, including her Patchwork of the Crosses, which quilters are rediscovering. When we found out that Hathaway Quilters in Stratford-upon-Avon had made a tribute quilt for their 25th Anniversary Exhibition to be held in March, we were keen to find out more. The Hathaway Quilters take their name from Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathaway and the group has been meeting in Stratford-upon-Avon for the past 25 years. The National Trust acquired Red House in 2003, up until then it remained in private ownership. As tastes changed, much of his original decoration was covered over with panelling, wallpaper or paint. A Pre-Raphaelite wall painting was recently discovered in a bedroom for years behind a fitted wardrobe and covered with wallpaper. Conservation work has uncovered a painting, measuring 6ft by 8ft. The painting, designed for what had been Morris and his wife Jane’s bedroom, depicts biblical characters: the figures of Adam and Eve (with the serpent), Noah (holding a miniature ark), Rachel and Jacob (with a ladder) and is designed to resemble a hanging tapestry with the illusion of folds. Experts believe it is by William Morris and friends, all of whom were important Pre-Raphaelite artists.…

“A house should be clothed by its garden”William Morris Standen House was built between 1891 and 1894 as the country home of James Beale – a successful solicitor from Birmingham – and his wife and seven children. The Beale family commissioned architect Philip Webb to create a comfortable house in the country. Work began on Standen at the end of 1891. It was constructed using local material and traditional construction methods; only “the best materials and workmanships” would do – a practice in line with the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement. However, Standen was built as a thoroughly modern house complete with central heating and electricity. A symbol of comfort and togetherness, house blocks are very appealing and their structure makes them an easy block to work with. “Appliqué perse and crazy patchwork are two of my favourite techniques and when they are combined they beautifully evoke a past era of subtle, decorative effects. I used some lovely gentle chintz cottons for the crazy patchwork, to contrast with the deep red appliqué rose. As the bag design evolved I realised it would also be perfect to feature some additional embellishment, so I added some antique lace, an interesting frayed-edge selvedge and some little beads.”…

Anna designed this quilt to showcase the beautiful Outback Wife collection by Gertrude Made for Ella Blue Fabrics. The Sawtooth Star block is a simple yet elegant quilt block that allows the large-scale floral designs to really shine. HELP! Is there a quick way to make a multicoloured binding? Try this… Yes there is, you could try strip piecing, which is particularly useful if you want regular, repeating fabrics. 1 Decide how long you want the fabric lengths to be and then cut strips to this measure x width of the fabric. Sew together into a strip-pieced unit, as in Fig 8. 2 Cut the unit into segments 2½in wide, and then join the segments together into a long length. If binding a quilt, you will probably need to make several strip-pieced units. HELP! I thought I had planned correctly to avoid seams on corners, but I find that this still happens sometimes. Whatever your favourite style or method of working, as quilters and patchworkers we all share a love of fabric. Textile artist Bethan Ash enthuses, “I love the texture and the feel of cloth, and I adore colour and exploring its intensity and contrasts, so my materials have a significant influence on my designs.” Bethan started her quilting journey in the late 1970s, making traditional block-pieced bed quilts in Liberty Tana Lawn cottons. But, in the mid-1980s, she began to dye her own fabrics and has rarely used commercial prints since. As well as colouring new cotton, with her interest in recycling, Bethan also repurposes old sheets and curtain linings. Her dye of choice is fluid acrylic paints. Preferring an intense colour identity, Bethan puts only a single colour of paint…

I have so often looked at fabric and uttered the phrase, “Oh it’s beautiful – very William Morris!” His style has inspired countless artists, including fabric designers, and I’m sure many of us have something Morris-esque in our stash. When I discovered that FreeSpirit Fabrics had teamed up with Morris & Co. to produce fabric with icons such as the Strawberry Thief at its very core, my heart skipped a beat! The William Morris Society has a worldwide membership and offers the opportunity, together with fellow ‘Morrisians’ both in Britain and abroad, to perpetuate the memory of William Morris. They also encourage the work of local, regional and national groups. The Society publishes a journal, newsletter and commentaries on all aspects of Morris’s work and runs a varied series of talks and visits throughout the year. Designers Peter Thwaites and Rebecca Aird have been commissioned to create a collection of modern hand-printed fabrics and wallpapers for Standen, using inspiration gathered by visitors, volunteers and staff. The commissioned wallpaper has been hung in the newly refurbished servants’ wing, an area where there is little historical information regarding decoration and furniture. Textiles are placed in various rooms throughout the house. The Standen Collection exhibition continues until Friday 27 April 2018.
