William Morris was an English designer, writer and social activist. Devoted to decorative arts, a century of his legacy is all around us and he excelled as a writer, poet, embroiderer, designer, calligrapher, dyer, weaver, translator, architectural preservationist, socialist and publisher. On the occasion of his death, the socialist newspaper, The Clarion , printed this moving eulogy: “He was our best man. We cannot spare him; we cannot replace him. In all England there lives no braver, kinder, honester, cleverer, heartier man than William Morris.
