“When thinking of how to use Layer Cakes, there is a tendency to think ‘big’. This quilt, however, is totally the reverse and we definitely thought ‘small’. Our little house blocks are only 4½in square, so some of the pieces are quite tiny! However, once you have pieced your little house blocks, the Layer Cake squares are the perfect size for making the frame, which tilts your little houses in different directions. This quilt doesn’t take as long as you would think although a bit of organisation is necessary. You could of course have any 4½in block in the centre knowing that your Layer Cake squares will frame them like this perfectly.”…

DIARY DATE Destination Newcastle The Quilters’ Guild is holding their AGM and Conference in Newcastle upon Tyne from 20th April to 22nd April. For the first time there will be an American style Carousel on the Friday afternoon. Featuring 11 very different and very talented tutors, each will be doing 20 minute demonstrations of techniques, processes and ways with textiles (tickets cost £12). “This quilt is all about the fun of using up the bits you might otherwise throw away. It is stitched without too much thought as to which fabric goes next to which, and in doing this you will end up with some lovely unexpected combinations. The quilt is not about matching and accuracy either. The strings are sewn on to a foundation that is trimmed to shape and then sewn into blocks. Work on something that gives you pleasure – if you aren’t enjoying the subject or what you’re doing, move on. If you are feeling stuck for inspiration, take time to look really closely at something you like; observe, and perhaps draw, its shapes and patterns, reflecting on the possible design potential of what you see in front of you. When thinking about which technique/s to use, first consider what you want to achieve and work back from that. Don’t be afraid to try new things – if something doesn’t work or you don’t use it, don’t worry about it as there will always be something you can learn from it. If you’ve never made journal quilts before, give them a go as a way of investigating what you might like…
