This is a great scrap quilt. You can use up all those leftover Jelly Roll strips and combine them into one of three different quilts, using the same technique and fabrics, but giving very different looks. This quilt used all of the blocks from the cutting method that featured the green and turquoise prints as the pinwheels. The second quilt uses all of the remaining blocks with the light fabric featured as the pinwheels. And last but not least you could combine the two blocks to give a tessellating pinwheel quilt. If one fabric is easier to mark than the other, make that the top layer. Cutting the triangles The classic half-square triangle used in many quilt patterns is created by dividing a square diagonally into two right-angled triangles. These are combined with whole squares to make a huge number of block patterns, as well as decorative borders and edgings. Traditionally the method of making these triangular designs was to make a template, cut out the shapes, then piece them together by hand or machine, following the drawn sewing lines. Which is exactly how I would do it if I were marooned on a desert island. But I’m not, thankfully, so it’s using quick methods with the rotary cutting equipment and sewing machine for me every time. HELP!   I want to get a really realistic look with my appliqué perse but some details are too small to include – what can I do? Try this… Appliqué perse can be made to look even more realistic by the addition of details specific to a motif. Note any parts on the motifs that are too small for appliqué, but which can be added later. These would include details such as thin flower and leaf stems, butterfly antennae, delicate bird and insect legs and fish barbels. These are easily added using embroidery stitches. Look at your source fabric to note the colour and thickness of the particular feature and then mimic this with stitches and strands of embroidery cotton. In our variation we have pieced our blocks so that all the units are facing the same way and have made the quilt far more scrappy. We also added a different coloured border. Get even more from your scraps and make two quilts from one technique! Using the ‘light’ blocks left over from the first quilt to make the pinwheels creates a completely different looking design... and much of the work is already done! The division of a square into two triangles is such an attractive image visually. I’m sure I could happily spend the rest of my quilting life just making quilts from squares and rectangles. I like them presented straightforwardly, or turned on point, as in issue’s 7 Virtual Workshop. Even with all those amazing pieces displayed at the Festival of Quilts last year, my absolute favourite was Mary Mayne’s scrap quilt, a collection of different sized squares and brick shapes arranged in rows with no obvious repeating of the patterns.
