The 152nd Open Championship wasn’t quite the epic it could have been, purely because Xander Schauffele played so well, he wrestled the Claret Jug from the chasing pack’s grasp.
It was, however, a wonderful showcase for links golf; with 400-yard downwind drives, 210-yard drives into the wind, ball-gobbling gorse aplenty, revetted bunkers galore, more wind, sideways rain, 115 yards of the joyous Postage Stamp wreaking havoc, more wind, driver-driver into par 5s, drivers into par 3s, more wind… and a very worthy champion.
