Titanium fairway woods originally appeared on 5H the scene soon after Callaway’s game-changing titanium driver, the Great Big Bertha, hit the market back in 1995.
Like their big brothers, titanium fairways were significantly more forgiving on off-centre hits. But the switch from stainless steel to titanium also made them expensive, and while golfers were happy to pay top whack for a titanium driver they’d use perhaps 14 times in a round, pricey fairways were a much tougher sell.
So, while over the last 30 years most major brands have made titanium fairway woods, in reality nobody’s ever quite found the right recipe to satisfy the masses.
