PLAYERS’ IRONS
This year, brands have started referring to players’ irons as ‘Muscle Cavity’ and ‘Tour Cavity’ models, and club engineers have no-one other than low single-figure handicappers in mind when designing this category. Better player irons have smaller heads, less offset, narrower soles and thinned down top lines. Any cavity back will be small, and thanks to the reduced size, weight positioned around the head perimeter is closer to the centre of gravity, which makes it easier to shape shots (remember, bad shots go further offline, too), while being naturally less forgiving. Less offset moves the centre of gravity forwards, which produces a lower ball flight, and expect the weakest lofts -so if distance is a priority, you really are looking in the wrong category.
