She learned to sew at age 25 when she bought her first sewing machine, a 1960s Singer, at a thrift store. Susan Beal has since gone on to author three sewing books: Hand-Stitched Home (The Taunton Press, 2014), Sewing for all Seasons (Chronicle Books, 2013), and Modern Log Cabin Quilting (Potter Craft, 2011).
As a freelance sewing, crafting, and quilting writer, Susan appreciates having a dedicated, 150-square-foot studio in the basement of her Portland, Oregon, home. As a mom, she finds this an ideal studio situation because it’s easy to get to. “I can zip downstairs whenever I have a few minutes,” says Susan. “I have two little kids, so sewing time can be very elusive.”
