Over years of working with authors, freelance writers and bloggers, New Jersey-based publicity expert Melissa Cassera has found that many writers have dreams beyond merely putting words on a page. Writers love to talk about voice, don’t we? We’re obsessed with it. It’s a key element of any written work and, arguably, the most important element of fiction. And authors seem to speak of it in the most earnest and whimsical ways. “I write only because there is a voice within me that will not be still,” poet Sylvia Plath wrote. An award-winning author and editor, as well as a famous teacher of writing, Lee Gutkind is widely referred to as “the godfather behind creative nonfiction.” As such, he’s been both celebrated for this booming publishing genre and derided for its “flexibility” with the truth, perhaps best illustrated by James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces. Gutkind, though, disapproves of creative-nonfiction authors who fabricate events. Today we remember Edgar Allan Poe as one of the earliest authors (some would say the creator) of both detective stories and horror stories, and as the writer of some of the most haunting poems in the language. We may be less familiar with his nonfiction works, including his articles and essays on the art of writing. To supplement the sporadic, often meager payments he received for his tales and poems, Poe published as often as he could in magazines and newspapers. In January 2010, I had one book on Kindle and sold 31 copies. I had two print books on the market with a small publisher, and they weren’t selling much better. By the end of that year, however, I had six books on Kindle and had sold more than 10,000 copies. To get from point A to point B, I had to make some radical decisions. Here’s how to find (and keep) artist collaborators: Review samples of their work. Online sites such as deviantART let you browse artwork and contact artists. When Tayari Jones met the woman she calls her fairy godmother, Jones’ first two novels, Leaving Atlanta and The Untelling, were out of print. She also had lost her publisher, due to a merger and restructuring. At a Florida writing conference, a little lady introduced Jones to someone at Algonquin Books. That lady turned out to be Judy Blume, and Algonquin went on to publish Silver Sparrow, Jones’ spellbinding breakthrough novel that follows a man’s two daughters—one from each of his two wives. Does a story need an antagonist? AN ANTAGONIST stands in opposition to the protagonist, or main character. Not all works of fiction include an antagonist, but many do. An antagonist may be an individual character or a group of characters. In Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the main character, a patient named Randle McMurphy, butts heads with the antagonist, Nurse Ratched, who maintains an authoritative power over the ward. An antagonist need not be human. In Stephen King’s Cujo, a rabid St. Bernard traps a woman and her son in their car. In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, a novel that follows a young boy and his father in a postapocalyptic world, the bleak setting may be seen as the antagonist. There are 1,001 sites devoted to putting together a résumé, but the majority tend to ignore freelancers’ needs. Whether you’re hoping to land a day job, pick up a temporary contract or win a work-for-hire assignment, it can be hard to feel confident with a résumé that can only highlight a handful of your professional successes. So what’s a freelance writer to do? Cut to the chase. In first-person plural, “we” is a character in a story. If your story is about two people, or a group of people, this could be the best point of view at your disposal. First-person plural is used most frequently in short pieces, as, typically, a group of people can only want the same thing for so long before someone in the group starts to want something else. Advantages of first-person plural. Like second person, first-person plural is rarely employed in fiction, so readers immediately notice the POV. For years, I’ve questioned its validity. “Just sit down and freewrite in a notebook,” I argue with my students. “Something good always finds its way onto the page.” Turns out creativity isn’t always that simple. ONE WAY TO GET a better sense of how mysteries can help your writing is to read a bunch of them and take them apart. Outline them. Read them a few times, once for pleasure, then to see how it’s done. Here are some good ones to start with: • The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie. No one writes a fast-paced plot the way Dame Agatha does. • The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Since comic books hopped off the dime-store rack and grew up into graphic novels, they’ve become the most dynamic subcategory of publishing, as diverse in its forms as its formats. Once limited to adventure serials and slapstick antics printed on cheap paper, they are now sold in lavishly produced volumes and posted for free online. Almost every big publisher features some kind of graphic novel in its catalogs; some have even launched imprints, such as Macmillan’s First Second. The audience for graphic fiction is in many ways more receptive than readers of traditional prose. In 1929, Virginia Woolf published an essay based on a lecture series she delivered to two women’s colleges at the University of Cambridge. In the piece, she famously stated, “It is necessary to have five hundred [pounds] a year and a room with a lock on the door if you are to write fiction or poetry.” Room, a 35-year-old Canadian literary journal for and about women, takes its name from Woolf’s essay. The Philadelphia area is known for cheesesteaks, Rocky, Ben Franklin and crazed sports fans, but it’s also home to many successful authors and writers. Two of them—Jonathan Maberry and Gregory Frost—wanted to raise their own profiles as well as pool knowledge, resources and connections to promotional venues. They looked for other writers who shared their goals and came up with the idea to form an organization that would promote writing and help aspiring writers. Many writers have no back-up plan for their most important documents, yet faulty motherboards, software corruption and viruses account for between three to eight percent of computer failures. You’ll want to be prepared for not if but when your computer breaks down. I know firsthand. As a lifelong introvert, I always assumed that networking involved being a slick wheeler-dealer. As a result, I worried that my chances of seeing my first novel published were slim to none. No one can write a book. J.K. Rowling can’t. Tom Clancy can’t. All you, I and those other writers can do at any one time is write part of a book. If those parts are well-planned, eventually they will fit together to form an entire book. One of the aspects of freelancing I love—and many others do as well—is that I work for myself. My success, or failure, is in my own hands. That fact can present a problem, though. As a freelancer, you don’t have a boss or supervisor you can rely on for an annual review.
