The judiciary has been forced to draw up guidance for courts on how to deal with “emotional support animals”, because defendants are increasingly seeking to bring badly behaved and disruptive pets into court to help them cope with “stress”. Transplant breakthrough Doctors have for the first time successfully transplanted a pig’s liver into a human recipient – a breakthrough that could give hope to transplant patients, many of whom die while waiting for suitable donors. Pigs’ organs are a similar size to ours, and in recent years, surgeons have transplanted pig kidneys and hearts into humans, after modifying some key genes to reduce the chance of the organs being rejected. The liver, however, is more challenging. Whereas the heart and kidneys each have one main function, the liver carries out a range of tasks – including detoxifying harmful substances, regulating blood sugar, storing energy and breaking down fats. The Silvertown Tunnel, the first new Thames crossing in London in more than 50 years, opened this week. The £2.2bn tunnel, designed to take the pressure off the nearby Blackwall Tunnel, was also the first major UK infrastructure project in many years to be delivered on time and on budget. Our goods are too cheap To The Times I am not an economist and cannot pretend to offer an informed view on President Trump’s tariffs, but the production of ever-cheaper products for mostly Western consumption has not been entirely positive. The real cost of a £10 pair of jeans is paid by the worker in the Far East, who is paid a pittance to work like a dog. It is paid by the environment as products are shipped worldwide, and as people dispose of belongings rather than repair or re-use them. Courtesy of a new pilot project, doctors in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, can now prescribe visits to art museums as part of a treatment plan, said Elise Morton on Euronews. The initiative, which covers the cost of entry to any of the town’s four museums, “aims to boost mental health and provide some cultural respite for patients”.
