The most violent single confrontation during the strike took place on 18 June 1984. Miners from across Britain had assembled at the British Steel coking plant in Orgreave, South Yorkshire, to stop lorries full of coke leaving the plant for Scunthorpe’s steel furnaces. This was illegal, since the miners’ dispute was with the NCB, not British Steel. That day, after three weeks of picketing, 8,000 miners faced some 6,000 police, including 42 mounted officers, led by South Yorkshire Police but bolstered by officers from 17 other forces.
