Tips… how to make your own compost
● Build a 1m² container by nailing wooden pallets together, or buy a kit. Put it directly on soil, in a sunny spot, and line with cardboard (replacing it over time). Add roughly 50:50 green and brown waste.
● Greens: vegetable peelings, leaf material from plants, grass clippings (in layers, not too much at once), nettles, annual weeds, comfrey, teabags and coffee grounds. Cut or shred large or stalky bits first.
● Browns: cardboard, shredded paper, hay, straw, sawdust, wood shavings, hedge clippings, leaves (in layers), eggshells, 100% natural clothing fibre, a little wood ash.
● Do not add: diseased plants, perennial weed roots or seed heads, meat, fish, fats, grease, oils, coal ash or pet waste.
