Thirty years ago, a 17-year-old Ronnie O’Sullivan became the youngest-ever winner of the UK Championship, said Nick Metcalfe in The Times. Last Sunday, he created a remarkable double, by becoming the event’s oldest winner, as he triumphed there for the eighth time. The 48-year-old produced a “brilliant finish” to stave off a comeback from China’s Ding Junhui. The World No. 1 had led 4-1 early on, but Ding, a three-time winner, “showed all his redoubtable qualities” to level the scores at 4-4, and then again at 7-7. From there, however, O’Sullivan “produced a masterclass”, reeling off breaks of 100, 74 and 129 to clinch a 10-7 victory.
