“Between 2016 and 2019, a shaven-headed thug by the name of Adam Graham carried out two violent rapes,” said Julie Bindel in the Daily Mail. After Novaya Gazeta ran an article about him in 2018, a severed ram’s head was delivered to the newspaper’s offices, and a funeral wreath was addressed to the journalist specifically. Tate Britain is rehanging its galleries so as to “highlight the work of artists previously marginalised” and “offer a more inclusive narration of British art and history”. In practice, says Craig Simpson in The Daily Telegraph, that means that when the rehang opens in May, a series of paintings linked to the British empire will have been taken out of storage and displayed with labels explaining links to colonialism and the slave trade. Adolfo Kaminsky 1925-2023 Adolfo Kaminsky was a former clothes dyer’s apprentice who used his knowledge of inks to save thousands of lives during the War. Recruited to the French Resistance in 1944, he was sent to work in an underground laboratory in Paris where he forged identity cards and other official documents for Jews and others facing persecution by the Nazi regime. What happened Days after Germany, the US and other allies agreed to send tanks to Ukraine last week, Kyiv put in a plea for 200 advanced fighter jets, such as US-made F-16s. President Biden was quick to rule out the idea. The UK said it would not be sending any jets for now; France said that it might offer fighter jet pilot training, and that nothing was “excluded”. The Associated Press (AP) news agency has apologised for suggesting that its journalists avoid terms such as “the French”. Amsterdam Holocaust ignorance: Almost a quarter of Dutch people born after 1980 think that the Holocaust is “a myth”, or that the number of Jewish people killed by the Nazis is “greatly exaggerated”. That is the finding of new research by the Claims Conference, a body that negotiates and administers payments to Jewish victims of Nazi persecution and their heirs. It found “shocking” levels of ignorance among millennials and Generation Z in the Netherlands, higher than in the US, UK, France, Austria and Canada, where it carried out similar surveys. Nearly half-a-million people missed out on starting medicines to lower their blood pressure during the pandemic, according to new research backed by the British Heart Foundation (BHF). By comparing data on prescriptions dispensed in England, Scotland and Wales in the three years from 2018, the scientists were able to show that 491,306 fewer people than expected had started taking blood-pressure lowering drugs between March 2020 and the end of July 2021. With an ageing population and a shortage of workers, the Government is keen that people delay their retirement. To The Times Your editorial on a libel action by a Russian “gangster” suggests that it is “shameful” for barristers and solicitors to act for “dubious clients”, and that we should take more notice of our “wider ethical obligations to society”. The primary ethical obligation of lawyers is to the rule of law, which requires that all persons, however “dubious”, have access to legal advice and representation. This applies to alleged murderers, rapists, paedophiles, and also to Russians. There are exceptions to this professional obligation, and rightly so – in particular, that we may not assist litigation which we believe to have no reasonable basis or which is being pursued to harass others. Firefighters across the UK have voted in favour of industrial action in support of better pay. The risk of being “fat and frail” Having a bulging waistline in middle age more than doubles a person’s risk of being physically frail in older age, a study has found. The research, published in BMJ Open, drew on data from 45,000 people in Norway, who were 51 on average when, in 1994, their BMI was recorded and their waist circumference was measured. Two decades later, the participants were surveyed again for five indicators of frailty: a recent feeling of exhaustion, slow walking speed, unintentional weight loss in the previous six months, weak grip strength, and low physical activity levels.
