There are some words that make your heart sink, said Marie Le Conte in The Independent. It could be the name of an ex-partner, or of a place “long gone, but still missed”, or any other word that unlocks painful memories. Like “Brexit”, for instance. And there it was, back again, in the weekend’s papers. “Britain mulls Swiss-style ties with Brussels,” The Sunday Times reported. “Senior Government figures”, it said, were planning to seek access to the European single market. The story played “all the greatest hits”. The Government, it said, wants frictionless trade with the EU, but not free movement of people.
