Politicians love to rally their supporters against imagined enemies, said Matthew Parris in The Times. In his 1999 conference speech, Tony Blair took aim at “the forces of conservatism”. Addressing last week’s Tory conference, Liz Truss’s target was what she called the “anti-growth coalition”. These, she declared, are the people holding Britain back. Labour, the Lib Dems, the SNP, the “militant unions” – they’re all members of the AGC. So, apparently, are “the vested interests dressed up as think tanks”, eco-protesters, Brexit deniers, north Londoners living in townhouses, and assorted pundits and podcasters. The dynamism of the British economy, it seems, is being smothered by the interventions of these “sneering, naysaying Enemies of the People”.
