We need our own nuclear deterrent – fast
Die Welt (Berlin) For the first time since 1949, Germany can no longer count on America’s nuclear shield, says Christian Hacke. Germany, once a close US ally, now seems to be Donald Trump’s “arch enemy”, and America’s resentful isolationism looks set to persist, as it did between the two World Wars. This sudden reversal couldn’t come at a worse time. China and, more worryingly still, Russia, are flexing their muscles, while Germany’s own armed forces are in a state of catastrophic neglect. Only four of its 128 Eurofighter jets, it was recently revealed, are actually operational. “Nothing flies, nothing floats, nothing runs.” Germany, then, needs a nuclear deterrent, and fast.
