Why was the war so significant? On the morning of 5 June 1967, Israel launched a massive air attack that would destroy more than 90% of Egypt’s air force on the tarmac. Within three days, the Israeli Defence Forces had achieved an overwhelming victory on the ground against Egypt’s army, capturing the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula. Syria and Jordan entered the war in Egypt’s defence, and suffered crushing Israeli counterattacks. Alcohol-related hospital admissions have increased by 64% in a decade – from 670,000 in 2005-06 to 1.1 million in 2015-16. The largest number of admissions was among 55- to 64-year-olds. Separate data, newly released by the Office for National Statistics, showed that people aged 45 to 64 drink alcohol more regularly than any other age group. When interviewed in 2016, 60% of women in that age group, and 69% of men, said they’d had an alcoholic drink in the previous week. The survey found that a higher proportion of Britons now describe themselves as teetotal than in previous years (21%), but the increase is largely made up of young people. “Few murderers have so haunted the public imagination as did Ian Brady,” said Peter Stanford in The Guardian. Brady died this week, aged 79, having spent more than 50 years in prison for the crimes he committed with Myra Hindley. Together, they killed five young people between 1963 and 1965 – torturing and sexually abusing their victims and burying them on Saddleworth Moor, outside Manchester. To The Times If rail renationalisation is to be a vote winner for Labour, they will be relying on a mix of ignorance from those who have never experienced it, and amnesia from those who have. As a commuter for more than 40 years, I recall the sad realities of British Rail. Passengers were never seen as customers and so there was no concept of “customer service”. Rude staff and long queues at ticket offices were commonplace. Management was generally weak, with the trade unions regularly flexing their muscles. Ibuprofen linked to heart attacks In high doses, common painkillers such as ibuprofen can raise the risk of heart disease within the first week of regular use, a new study suggests. An international team of researchers examined health data from 446,763 people, of whom 61,460 had suffered a heart attack. They found that the risk of having a heart attack was 20% to 50% higher if the patient was taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); however, it varied according to the individual drug. With ibuprofen, the increased risk associated with a month of use was about 75%, whereas for rofecoxib (now withdrawn from the market) it was more than 100%. Now, to keep it fresh, BMW has given the range a “gentle facelift”, and slightly revised its interiors and drivelines. In 2015, palaeoarchaeologists caused a sensation when they described the fossilised remains of a previously unknown human species that had been found – two years earlier – in a chamber deep inside a cave network outside Johannesburg. Named Homo naledi, the 5ft-tall hominin was found to have had a bizarre mix of modern and ancient traits: tiny brains and chimp-like shoulders, for climbing, but also long legs and human-like feet. The question was, how old were the bones? Experts speculated that H.naledi had emerged more than two million years ago, close to the time the Homo genus originated. This is a mistake: first, because it will not be achieved. A second reason the target is mistaken is because it confuses numbers for impact. Jack Bogle Many Britons have never heard of Jack Bogle, says Harry Wilson in The Times. But the 88-year-old founder of Vanguard – a pioneer of low-cost investing – has “probably done more to revolutionise the global money management business than anyone else alive”. And it all began when he was sacked. Bogle was fired as chairman of Wellington, a traditional US fund, for an “extremely unwise” merger. But that led to the 1975 foundation of the first Vanguard fund, named after Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of the Nile. With $4trn in assets, Vanguard is now the world’s second-largest manager, and it is heading our way: bad news for local players with higher fees.
