The region is one of the last bastions of rebel control in Syria, and has been subjected to a relentless campaign of aerial bombardment by Syrian and Russian bombers, despite the supposed ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russia in December. Australia’s “dinosaur Serengeti” The biggest dinosaur footprint ever found – big enough for an adult human to lie down in – has been found on a remote stretch of coastline in Western Australia. The print, made by a vast sauropod, measures 5ft 9in (1.75 metres) across, making it far larger than the titanosaur print found last year in the Gobi desert: that was just 3ft 6in (106cm). “There’s nothing that comes close to [this length],” said Steve Salisbury, of the University of Queensland, whose research project, run with local indigenous groups, uncovered the tracks. Scientists are developing a blood test that could not only detect cancer before symptoms appear, but also pinpoint its location. It has long been known that tumours cast tiny fragments of DNA into the bloodstream. Researchers have also discovered that cancers emanating from different tissues have different “molecular footprints”. Now, a team led by Professor Jasmine Zhou, of the University of Southern California, has developed a computer-based system to analyse the DNA fragments found in blood plasma, and compare their molecular makeup with a database corresponding to particular tissues. In a small trial, they tested the system on patients with lung, liver or breast cancer, and found that it was able to detect early-stage cancer with 80% accuracy. “The technology is in its infancy,” said Zhou, “but the potential benefits…

It bodes ill for the Brexit process, said The Guardian, that the very name of the Great Repeal Bill, unveiled last week by David Davis, is “a piece of rhetorical trickery”. The title suggests that Britain is about to break free of Brussels red tape, yet the Bill will merely transfer the entire body of EU law into UK law. The only thing actually being repealed is the 1972 European Communities Act, which gives direct effect to EU law in Britain. Davis also confirmed last week that, since the case law on which EU rules depend originates from the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, the existing rulings of that court will be taken as precedent equivalent in status to UK Supreme Court judgments.
