A £116m project to build a life-size replica of the Titanic has been launched in China. The new ship won’t be seaworthy; it will sit in a dry dock next to the Qi river in Daying County, Sichuan. Nor will it contain recreations of every single room in the doomed liner. A 14th century “plague pit” has been discovered outside London for the first time. The mass grave was uncovered by archaeologists working at the site of a medieval monastery hospital in rural Lincolnshire. The University of Sheffield team had gone to Thornton Abbey to look for the remains of buildings, and in the process stumbled on a shallow grave containing 48 skeletons of both sexes, 27 of them children. Carbon dating showed the bones were from the mid-14th century – which is when the Black Death, or bubonic plague, devastated Europe – while DNA extracted from teeth tested positive for Yersinia pestis, the plague bacterium. That’s the theory, says Jeff Guo, and people often point to Asian Americans as proof. Until 2 April The American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was a “radical innovator” who sought to blur the boundaries between art and everyday life, said Rachel Campbell-Johnston in The Times. Growing up in remote Texas, Rauschenberg did not actually see a work of art in the flesh until he was 18, but he was a crucial figure in the “cultural move” from the “portentous aesthetic” of abstract expressionism dominant in the 1940s to the “playful irreverence” of 1960s pop art. Reykjavík Pirates asked to form government: Iceland’s anti-establishment Pirate Party, which was formed just four years ago by a group of former internet hacktivists, has been asked by the nation’s president to try to form a government. It follows an inconclusive general election in October in which the Pirates took 14.5% of the vote, and ended up as the third-biggest party, with ten seats in the 63-member parliament. Alzheimer’s drug fails final trials A drug that seemed to offer the best hope yet of an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s has failed in its final stage of clinical trials, reports The Guardian. Solanezumab, made by Eli Lilly, attacks the amyloid plaques that build up in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, and which have long been assumed to be the main cause of the disease. Early trials suggested that although it couldn’t help patients in the advanced stages of the disease, it might significantly slow the onset of Alzheimer’s. However, that hope has been extinguished by a phase three trial, involving more than 2,100 patients with mild dementia, in which those given Solanezumab fared no better than those given a placebo. No US president has spoken to his counterpart in Taiwan for 37 years. In fact, no US president has acknowledged that Taiwan even has a president, for fear of upending relations with Beijing, which views Taiwan as a breakaway province.
