Britain’s hospitals are struggling to cope with an influx of elderly people, and lives are being put at risk as a result, the Government’s health inspectorate has warned. In a 146-page report, drawing on 20,000 inspections of hospitals, care homes and GP surgeries, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said that 81% of hospitals could improve their safety, while one in ten were positively unsafe. The problem, it said, is being driven by failings in social provision for Britain’s fast-ageing population: 200,000 more people than five years ago are not getting the help they need. Abuja, Nigeria Girls freed: Twenty-one of the more than 200 girls kidnapped from a school in the Nigerian town of Chibok in April 2014 were freed last week. There were widespread reports – officially denied – that their release was in exchange for four Boko Haram prisoners, and that a multimillion-dollar ransom had been paid. Handed over in northeast Nigeria, the girls have now been reunited with their families in the capital, Abuja. The world’s longest-living person is believed to be Jeanne Calment, a French woman who died, aged 122, in 1997. The Hague, Netherlands “Right to die” extension plan: The Dutch government is preparing a draft law that would extend legal assisted suicide to people who are not terminally ill but who simply feel that their life is “complete” and wish to end it. The Netherlands was the first country to legalise euthanasia, in 2002, but the law only applied to terminally ill patients who were judged to be suffering unbearable pain. The practice has had widespread backing in Dutch society, and the number of assisted suicides has risen sharply each year: in 2015, they accounted for 5,516 deaths, 3.9% of the national total. The discovery of a prehistoric dog tooth near Stonehenge has provided evidence of one of the earliest journeys in British history – and suggests that dogs were man’s best friend even 7,000 years ago. The tooth, which belonged to an Alsatian-like creature that lived around 5,000BC, was discovered by archaeologists at Blick Mead, a mile from Stonehenge. But an isotope analysis of its enamel reveals that the dog wasn’t from the area: in its youth, it had drunk water in the Vale of York, 250 miles away.
