Byron’s employees thought they were being summoned to a meeting about the dangers of undercooking burgers, said The Guardian. But when the staff, from several London branches of the restaurant chain, turned up at the appointed venue, at 9.30am on 4 July, there were no health and safety experts to be seen. Instead, four immigration officials burst into the room. “Nobody move,” they apparently shouted. Names were called out, and 35 workers, from Egypt, Brazil, Albania and other countries, were led away. Most have since been deported – prompting a furious public backlash from activists who accuse Byron of betraying its workers.
