Just over 72% of voters participated in the referendum – 33.6 million people; that compares to a turnout in the last general election of 66.1%.
By region, turnout was lowest in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and highest in the southeast and southwest of England.
The vote was divided 52% Leave, 48% Remain. Overall, 17,410,742 people voted to Leave; 16,141,241 to Remain.
In Scotland 62% voted to Remain, on a turnout of 67%. (In 2014’s Scottish independence referendum, turnout was 84.6%.) In Northern Ireland, 56% voted Remain, on a turnout of 63%. In Wales, 52.5% voted to Leave, a turnout of 71.7%.
