Radical “kill or cure” for MS A stem cell treatment has been found to halt the progress of multiple sclerosis, and even to reverse its symptoms – but in the process, it is likely to kill some patients. Doctors in Canada performed the procedure, which involves wiping out the immune system and “rebooting” it, on 24 patients. One of the participants died of an infection. However, 70% of them experienced no further deterioration in their symptoms, and several showed improvements in sight and balance. A 17-metrehigh homage to the beehive has been installed at Kew Gardens, says Alison Benjamin in The Guardian. The British artist Wolfgang Buttress’s installation The Hive is made out of 170,000 pieces of aluminium. Scientists are hoping to divert from landfill some of the seven million coffee cups Britons throw away each day, by turning them into furniture. The cups are usually rejected by recycling firms because they are lined with plastic, but engineers at Imperial College London, and the firm Nextek, have found a way of turning them into a strong, mouldable resin. A former government minister in Argentina was caught last week throwing bags of money over the walls of a monastery in Buenos Aires. José López said he was making a donation, but when police retrieved an estimated $8m-$10m in various currencies, including yen, they concluded he was more likely trying to hide the proceeds of corruption. A spokesman said it would take a while to work out the value of the money, but that it was an “obscene amount”. Climate change appears to have claimed its first victim: a humble rodent that lived exclusively on a tiny speck of land in the Great Barrier Reef. Bramble Cay melomys were first spotted in the mid-19th century, when they were so numerous that sailors – mistaking them for rats – shot at them for sport. But the last sighting was in 2009, and when scientists conducted an extensive survey on the tiny coral island, which is just 340 metres long and 150 metres wide, they found no trace of them. Volkswagen/Tesla: electric dreams Former VW chief Martin Winterkorn is under investigation in Germany, for allegedly withholding information from investors about the carmaker’s emissions scandal. Just as well, perhaps, that his successor, Matthias Müller, has unveiled a ten-year strategy to move the company on from the worst crisis in its 79-year history, said Patrick McGee in the Financial Times. The most eye-catching move is “a bigger push into electric and selfdriving cars”. That looks savvy, said The Guardian. Drugs decriminalisation Two leading public health bodies have called for drug use to be decriminalised. In a report last week, the Royal Society for Public Health and the Faculty of Public Health said the UK’s drugs strategy did not deter people from taking drugs, and caused further harm by stigmatising a significant proportion of the population and using up police resources. They called for a greater focus on treatment and education, and suggested that responsibility for drugs policy be moved to the Department of Health; however, the report said drug dealing should remain a criminal offence. Brussels Football terror plot “foiled”: Belgian police claim to have foiled an Isis-linked terror plot to attack fans gathered in Brussels to watch last Saturday’s Belgium vs. Ireland match. Police raided dozens of houses and more than a hundred garages in and around Brussels on the night before the match; 40 people were brought in for questioning, of whom 12 were arrested and three then detained on suspicion of “attempted assassination in a terrorist context, and participation in the activities of a terrorist group”. Last month has been declared the hottest May worldwide on record, making it the fifth consecutive “record warm” month this year. Nasa, which compares current global temperatures with the 1951-1980 average, found that this May had been 0.93°C warmer than normal. Yet that makes it, by current trends, cooler than it might have been: every other month since October 2015 has been at least 1°C above the 1951-1980 average. This year is already virtually guaranteed to be the hottest on record, overtaking 2015. Jacques Henri Lartigue at Michael Hoppen There can be no doubt that Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894-1986) was one of history’s most influential photographers. Indeed, this exhibition’s co-curator, the novelist William Boyd, observes that is “almost impossible to imagine the photographic landscape of the 20th century without him”. Lartigue’s characteristically offbeat and apparently throwaway images – seemingly unposed, as if the photographer’s finger had slipped at the wrong moment – invented what we now know as the snapshot. Boyd’s selection here pays particular homage to this innovation, bringing together a set of photographs that revel in spontaneity and the strangeness of the everyday. Kayaking the Cape Vasco da Gama was the first European to sail around it, more than five centuries ago. Since then, the Cape of Good Hope has acquired some 600 wrecks and an “armada of ghosts”. Braving the “huge winds” and “tremendous swells” of these South African waters in a kayak may sound like madness, says Jeremy Lazell in The Sunday Times – but amazingly, one operator is now giving beginners the chance to try. Carla Lane 1928-2016 Times were hard in 1980s Liverpool, but whereas most writers depicted the impact of Thatcherism through drama – for instance, the seminal TV series Boys from the Blackstuff – Carla Lane used comedy to explore the crisis in her native city. Stock markets and sterling soared as traders placed huge bets on Britain remaining in the EU, following a shift towards Remain in the polls. Dido Harding, boss of TalkTalk, has made “a more modest bonfire” of her £220,000 bonus, following one of the most high-profile cyber-attacks in British corporate history. She is donating it to charity. That should please MPs (some are pushing for companies to link executive pay to “effective cyber security”) – assuming “they can overlook” the fact that Baroness Harding’s total pay nearly tripled to £2.8m last year.
