In the past, those who lived hard, active lives – such as sailors, farm workers and navvies – often consumed 5,000 or more calories a day. Unlike us, on our 2,000 calories a day, they were not fat. Not only did they not share our sedentary lifestyle, but their homes and work places were also cold. In order to keep warm, they ate like horses and worked like them too.
