On August 12, World Elephant Day was marked across the globe. The day was established in 2012 to raise awareness and support for Asian and African elephants, whose populations are in danger due to habitat loss, climate change, and human activity.
Today, there are fewer than 415,000 wild elephants in Africa and fewer than 50,000 in Asia. African forest elephants are considered critically endangered, while African savannah elephants and Asian elephants are classified as endangered. Wildlife experts say that without protection, these species could become extinct.
The theme of this year’s World Elephant Day was “Mothers and Matriarchs,” which honored the “wisdom, memory, and leadership” of female elephants, organizers said.
