In May, public figures, including athletes and authors, gave speeches at college graduation ceremonies across the US. Commencement speeches are part of an American tradition meant to inspire graduates as they begin their adult lives. The custom of commencement speeches dates to graduation ceremonies held at Harvard University in Massachusetts in the 1600s, with students and professors speaking. By the late 1800s, prominent speakers addressed graduates. In recent years, entertainers have also delivered commencement speeches. Jellyfish are magnificent marine creatures that can be found in many shapes, colors, and sizes in waters all around the world. What is a jellyfish? For more than 500 million years, jellyfish have lived in the Earth’s oceans, making them older than dinosaurs. Despite being called jellyfish, due to their jelly-like substance, they are not actually fish, which have a backbone. (Many experts now refer to jellyfish as sea jellies.) A strike in bowling means that all the pins are knocked down on the first roll of the ball. It’s not easy to do, and bowlers work hard to perfect their technique so they can roll as many of them as possible. Now they may be getting help from scientists, who used computer modeling and a 300-year-old math principle to determine the best technique. Other mammals heal from wounds more than twice as quickly as humans, a new study has found. Researchers believe this is because humans evolved (changed very slowly over millions of years) to have skin rather than fur. Akiko Matsumoto-Oda, an expert in primates at the University of the Ryukyus in Japan, began the study after noticing how quickly baboons healed in the wild. She and her team set out to compare the healing rates of humans to those of primates and rodents. To gather data on humans, the team studied 24 patients who were having skin tumors (abnormal masses of tissue) removed. Scientists from Aberystwyth University in the UK have found that goats are more intelligent and have a better memory than sheep and alpacas. This suggests that farm animals are smarter than people think. The scientists conducted two studies. In one, they set up eight buckets, two of which contained food. Once the animals searched and found the food, researchers tested their ability to remember these locations. Upon returning to the area, the goats found the food the fastest. The sheep made more mistakes, while the alpacas were slower. Next, the researchers tested the animals’ problem-solving skills. The task involved finding food underneath cups. Many scientists have puzzled over why Neanderthals (our closest extinct relatives) vanished about 40,000 years ago, while humans evolved and thrived. A new study found that early humans may have outlasted Neanderthals partly by finding ways to protect themselves from unusually strong solar activity. Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that protects us from harmful energy from the Sun and space. Occasionally, a shift in the field allows more of that energy through. This most recently took place about 41,000 years ago, just before Neanderthals went extinct. Open + Shut: Celebrating the Art of Endpapers focuses on illustrated pages that are glued to the inside of book covers and make the first flippable page of a book. The exhibition features more than 50 pieces of endpaper artwork by more than 30 artists, and it highlights how endpapers connect to a book’s story.
