Top snow sports athletes have been competing at world championship events across Europe. Several Americans, as well as one Canadian teen, have won medals and made history.
The Nordic World Ski Championships, held in Planica, Slovenia, from February 21 to March 5, featured ski jumping, cross-country skiing, and Nordic combined (jumping and cross-country) events. On February 28, Jessie Diggins became the first American cross-country skier to win an individual world title. She finished the 10-kilometer freestyle 14 seconds ahead of silver medalist Frida Karlsson of Sweden. The 6.25-mile race course took skiers up 1,263 feet, about the height of the Empire State Building.
